Title: Anyone have any advice
Post by ellers on Mar 30th, 2003, 8:58pm
Hi!  I found this sight while surfing last night at 3:00 in the morning because i couldn't sleep because of my headaches.   and i didn't want to go back to bed, bec. why should i subjgate myself to the pain of lieing down in bed.  i was wondering if maybe anyone can help me.  i am 21 years old and female.  i got these headaches march 9 2002 and they haven't left since.  the neuro has tried every single med. he can think of and so far nothing has worked.  since my headaches are so weird, that they are constant, they don't act like migraines, tension, or cluster headaches.  whatever they happen to be technically i have no idea, but they hurt regardless if modern med. has given them a name.  i took a lot of anti depressants, anti seizure drugs, muscle relaxants, methergine, sleeping pills, narcotics, non narcotic pain killers, non steroidal anti inflamatories, and prednisone.  i can't take any beta-blockers bec. i am asthmatic.  i also tried all the short acting headache meds, like maxalt, imitrex etc..  basically everysingle med.  i just tried another med. last week which was supposed to knock me out and let me sleep.  the neuro told me that i was his only patient that it didn't knock out.

basically he told me that he doesn't think he can help me and he wants me to go to the michigan national institute of headache (?) in ann arbor under dr. saper.  as an inpatient for 2-3 weeks.

i have been to three nuero's had four mri's and been to three eye docs (bec. the medicines affected my eyes) and everyone has a different medicine to try but so far nothing has helped.

has anyone out there had a constant headache for over a year.  that literally has not left for even a sec.

oh i also, saw an accupuncturist and a physical therapist.  didn't really help.

i would really appreciate any input you have:)

thanks

ellers

There is a condition called migraine continua, or something like that, which you may be suffering from. Whatever it is I wish you luck in uncovering it and finding relief.

If your headaches are vascular in nature (which you aren't sure of at this point), you may benefit from shroom therapy.

I'm not a doctor and I cannot advise you one way or another, but if you are desperate for relief (and believe me I understand...mine act somewhat like yours)....you may want to look into it...Here is a good place to start looking around.

You also may be suffering from more than one type of headache at a time, like myself, which makes it really hard to diagnose.  And by the way, it's totally lame isn't it?

Feel free to e-mail me if you want to vent or chat.  Take care of yourself ok?  I"m having a shitty night with my headaches too so I'll welcome the distraction ;)

Welcome, and sorry you are here under the circumstances, but this is a good group of people.

I have been told what felt like one long headache was really a bunch of headaches, closely spaced together. It feels like one big headache that never goes away. Do you notice times where the pain is a little better, and sometimes it is a lot worse? Have you noticed anything that makes the pain worse, or better for you (non-medication related)?

If your Doctor really wants you to do the inpatient thing, you might check and see if there is one closer to you.
Some headache clinics sound good on paper, but actual treatments vary widely per clinic.

If you plan to fly across the country, ask around, get recommendations before you settle on one. Many of us have been to one or more. A really good one can be found in Houston, at the Houston Headache Clinic, run by Dr. Ninan Mathew. I can honestly recommend it as a very good program.

First to me it sounds like time for a doctor change if the one you have has not found anything to help you.

Constant headache can fall into many classes. A class of them is vascular like Migraines and CLusters and usually is helped by typical migraine abortives like Imitrex, Maxalt and the Triptan families when there pain levels are high.

If Indocin  reduces the headache itself then it is CDH or hemicrania continua.

Are these headaches isolated to one side behind the eye ? Do you get periodic stabbing pain like an ice pick in the affected eye and then severe pain subsides quickly, If so then maybe hemicrania continua HA.

Either way I would find me a good head doc. Check the Ouch pages for references in your state. If you don't care about travel see http:\\www.helpforheadaches.com. The Doc is very helpful for weird and difficult cases.
He is one of three I trust in IL.

:'(I'm really sorry you are having so much pain right now.I'm new around here also, but I couldn't help but respond to you. I've had migraines since 1994 (and clusterf*cks for a couple of years now,w/ a short cycle, thank God) and, girl, I literally feel your pain. My son had to be induced 7 wks early  :(because he stopped growing during my pregnancy (I had vomited every day  :-Xand had a CONSTANT migraine the entire time so believe me, I know how devastating these can be.)  I think it's called status migrainosis if it lasts longer than 72 hrs. Anyhow, the only thing that broke it was to be hospitalized and given IV meds(and made to sleep for 14 hrs.) The thing that sucks is that different things work for different people. My only input would be to research the institute, like people said, and if your Dr. can't help you, find a different Dr. Oh, yeah, and I've also found that this board can really make a big difference in how you feel. It has literally saved my life. No shit. So, please, e-mail me if you need to unload or vent, or complain. I don't know if you have anyone w/you that is supportive, but I know what it feels like not to, so feel free if you need. :)Wishing you PFDAN-Bonniegirl
