Title: Intranasal Capsaicin Safe Long Term? Post by BILLY on Mar 29th, 2003, 6:42pm Hi all I know capsaicin is widely used on the skin & is considered safe even for long term indefinite use on the skin but was curious if it is just as safe intranasally? I know it will burn much more as the mucous membranes are much more sensitive but will it damage the nasal mucosa like cocaine can for example? I searched the site & noticed one user from Israel has success with intranasal capsaicin without mentioning any damage but noticed one poster warned of this?? Anyone know? If there is a response without any noticeable lasting side effects, is there reason to be concerned that there may be in the long run? I understand it depletes the nerves locally of pain & vasodilating transmitters (substance P & CGRP) & acts like a local calcium channel blocker but the literature does not indicate any long term studies. I think 4 one week treatments in 2 years is the longest study & did not indicate adverse effects... Would appreciate any insight. |
