Post by athos12 on Mar 20th, 2003, 1:57am
"Any" clinical trials or med journals on shrooms?

I am trying to get all of the information that I can find.

The pharmacology and toxicology of shrooms and how they actually effect the CH, and if there is any medical documentation to support it?

Thanks

Athos

Athos -

There are no recent clinical trials or studiers of the effectiveness of psilocin on cluster headaches. The US government, at least, makes it very difficult to conduct such studies, and the pharmaceutical companies don't see enough profit potential to invest in research.

However --

There are studies from decades ago that show indole ring hallucinogens, such as psilocin and LSD, to be very effective in the relief of vascular headaches. Now those studies looked at LSD in the treatment of - dare I say the word? - migraines.

In fact, the legend is that Dr. Albert Hoffman, the Sandoz researcher who invented LSD, was looking for a treatment for migraines when he combined diethyl amide with an ergot derivative called lysegic acid. Then he got some on his fingers and had a very interesting experience...

And there are some solid theories as to why and how indole ring hallucinogens may affect serotonin levels and their effect on the hypothalamus.

I think you can find these theories on the websites Ave mentioned.

this is clipped from another posting i made last night -

Some of you may already know that there is a clinical trial underway at PRESENT - Approved by the FDA  ;D to treat patints with OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) with psilocybin. Unlike ECH, OCD patients require a full-dose psychedelic trip to relieve their symptoms. If anyone is wondering, in spite of taking a hefty dose, no one at the trial has had any problems with the psychedelic effects so far.

Since there is a growing body of antecdotal evidence on this BBS for psilocin and ECH, it might be possible to get this one on the next trial, especially if the OCD trials yeild positive results. The prblem is money - MAPS barely scraped together the funding for the OCD research.

Part of the point of mentioning that is to let concerned group members know that the FDA feels psilocybin has enough potential for testing, and is 'generally' considered safe by medical specialists familiar with pschedelic research.

for more information in this gov't APPROVED clinical psilocybin trial visit the MAPS website at www.maps.org
and specifically http://www.maps.org/research/index.html#PSILOCYBIN

did some more research - here's a few your doc might be able to relate to.

unfortunately this one describes the psychedelic side-effects as 'psychosis' lol, which i can personally attest is not the case, except in the case of a very high-dose 'bad-trip'.  Moderate changes in perception are not psychosis.

Here's some personal research. Shrooms works for me. There are no lasting effects or side effects that I know of . Do not take them if you are a nervous or anxious person in general. If you aren't, and you have no other experience with drugs such LSD or THC than just take a .5 of a gram, put some chill music on and relax. The good thing is that the effect only lasts for 2-3 hours, but .5 gram will barely hit you, unless they are really strong.

Good Luck

Thanks for all of the info...  my neiro is very open minded about it, he took all the info that I gathered and was impressed....  I also have talked with a pharmacological research guy that is "somewhat" interested in what I told him.....
