Title: Gut  aches anyone?/Neurontin positive
Post by fordf150 on Oct 20th, 2002, 7:38pm
I am taking verapamil 360/day, depakote 1000 dayand have taken these in the past but now am having alot of
abdominal cramps for past 10 days. Anyone else ever have gut problems with these meds? Had some labs drawn last month and they were OK. On a positive note I have started Neurontin 5 days ago(1200 mg day) and can actually tell that a drug is working. it is suppressing the shadows and seems to be elevating my mood, and has given me no side effects except for a little drowsiness the first day or two. Too bad it hasn't
helped the gut aches. I will up the dose to 1800 mg by the end of the week. Have to take dosages 3x a day which is a pain but it seems to wash out of your system
real quick. My cluster attacks started 6 weeks ago after a 2 year lay off. right when the leaves started to turn.
My neuro also has started me on Melatonin 3 mg. and
then increasing to 6 mg. Will see. Peace and clear heads to all.

Hi Ford.  Did your neuro give you the neurontin specifically for clusters?  I know it is an epileptic drug, but used for many other things, but I had no idea it was used for Clusters.  My mom takes it for essential tremor & I was prescribed it for feelings of parathesia, but it never helped.  Sorry I can't be of any help to your question, but I was just curious about the neurontin.  I was only give 100mg pills 3x a day which is nothing.  Is it actually helping the clusters?

Ford,
do you have "gut problems" like from constipation? Verapamil can do that to you, for some more, for some less.
If you think your abdominal cramps have to do with constipation you should take a laxative ASAP, as this condition can get dangerous.
Generally, it's a good idea when taking Verapamil to watch out for constipation and to take counter measures before the problem gets too hard (pun intended).
It helps me when I take 2 dried plums a day. But other stuff will help too, by example cooked apples, or anything else with lots of fibres.  Since it is season now, I eat half a pound of grapes a day, on the do the trick.

Reply: Bm's have been ok with stool softeners. but I am so full of gas that it hurts to take a big breath. Its almost like I got a small dose of the stomach flu but because of the verapamil it wouldn't "run its course".
I'm on generic ExRelease...last time I was on the more expensive plastic pill with the laser drilled hole. Maybe I will go back to that...assuming I don't explode first. Don't you be laughing out there........

Welcome ford,
I too suffered stomach cramps on the Depacote to the point that I had to stop taking it. Good luck with your meds,
Mark

If I eat wheat products while taking Verapamil I get TONS of gas. Not sure why, took a long time to figure that one out. Doc thought I was alergic to wheat at first. But when I dont; take Verapamil or Norvasc (same family of drugs I was told) I can eat wheat products (bread, cookies, cake, breaded chicken from any fast food chicken place).  If I am taking those meds and eat a sandwhich at lunch time by dinner time I am "tooting" about every four to five minutes. You might want to see if stopping wheat helps while your taking the meds.
