Title: Verapamil blues...
Post by joepauley on Oct 8th, 2002, 3:31pm
Well, after the better part of a week being PF, one broke through last night. Thankfully only about a 6-7, so it was bearable, but I took my prednisone back up to 30mg/day today because of it.

I've been on the verapamil for about 3 weeks now, and I'm not sure if it's doing the job or not. All I know is, regardless of how much water, fiber caps and fruit I ingest, I'm so damn constipated I can't see straight!  Any ideas out there about counteracting this? I even tried an enema, and it didn't work! (i.e., all the water came out, but that was it)

Help!!

Joe

Oatmeal, shredded wheat, fruit, stay hydrated, lots of fluids.... I've been on Vera for about 4 or 5 weeks now and the last two have been totally PF. a few minor shadows here and there, but for the money, Vera has worked for me. I haven't had the problem with constipation, but I changed my diet to try to prevent it, and so far so good. I started on 120 mg per day, and I'm now at 180 mg per day. People tell me this is very low, comparatively, but its working for me, so I'll stay there.
Try some of the milder laxatives - dulcodan, or colace(sp?)
good luck and glad to hear you're having some PF days

Had the same problem Joe.  I start to back up around 360 mg/day and all movement ceases at 480 mg/day (it's like being at absolute zero).  I tried everything too.  The old fasioned laxatives, the ones with phenothalene in them helped a little.  The newer, natural, gentle ones weren't worth a cr*p as much as I hoped they would be.

Next time I'm hitting my doc up for the industrial strength ones they use before you go in for a sphincter-hose-ectomy.

I haven't had any problems with constipation (and I'm on 720mg/day), but my doctor recommended 800mg/day of Mg if I did get it (Don't quote me on the amount, because all the info from my doctor is on my home computer, and my memory from my first visit to my neuro is fairly hazy).
