I Just started having these HA again after a break of about 3-4 years. Last time I had them, Zomig was new on the market and worked very well for me. My Dr. called in RX when these cranked up again but only 6 at a time. This was only lasting 3 days. After going thru 12 the DR. says I can not take anymore. Dr. says Zomig is hard on your system and should not take more than 6 per month. Now I am off on that road of med search again and have tried 2 others with no luck. now I am on Maxalt for the last 2 days and MAxalt does not seem to do anything to HA in progress. Also now taking Ultracet. Have an appt with neuro in 2 weeks if I last that long. Any suggestions ?

GCB,

I'm not a doctor, but assuming you have Cluster Headaches, I do have some opinions:

Yes, any of the Triptan class of drugs can be hard on your system, but it depends upon the condition of your cardiovascular system and your sensitivity. Zomig and Maxalt can be helpful in aborting Cluster Headaches, Imitrex injections are also very effective. But the idea is try to stop them before they happen too! Your doctor should be helping you to find a preventative medication along with the abortives.

If I recall, Ultracet contains an opiate based narcotic pain killer which are NOT the preferred method of treatment. In fact they do absolutely nothing good for many of us. They take too long to kick in and don't really kill the pain. Avoid it!

First, spend some serious effort using the "search" button above, the buttons on the left of this screen and ch.org. Take notes or print info to help educate your doctor about using Oxygen as an abortive (and how to use it). Breathing 100% O2 at a high flow rate through a "bag" type mask is VERY helpful for many, many of us. Try to get a prescription immediately, but read up enough to know how to argue the point and don't take "no" for an answer.

While you are researching, decide which preventative to try - again this may require educating your doctor. You will be amazed at the massive amount of information available! Read, read and read some more.

I can only scratch the surface of all of the possibilties in a post like this. If you find some confusing or conflicting info, post again and I'll bet someone around here will have an answer!

PAST THREE YEARS, I HAVEN'T SEEN A DOCTOR YET
WHO HAS THE TIME TO DEAL WITH THIS LET ALONE
KEEP TRYING TO HELP ME OTHER THAN SENDING ME
TO A NEUROLOGIST. I HAVE HAD A CAT SCAN WHICH
WAS NEGATIVE, BUT I DEFINITLY HAVE THESE HEADACHES. PLEASE WRITE ME BACK WITH ANY INFO
OR DR'S NAMES IN THE ROCKVILLE AREA WHO KNOW
THE LATEST RELEIF TECHNIQUES. I HAVE ALREADY
TRIED IMITREX, MAXALT, AND NO OTHERS. THESE
HEADACHES HAPPEN IN BUNCHES AND THEN SEEM
TO SUBSIDE. I JUST NEED SOMEONES OPINION WHO
HAS BEEN TO DOCTORS AND KNOWS WHAT I AM
GOING THROUGH TO EDUCATE ME BEFORE I SEE A

Marc, as far as a preventative I have been on Nortriptyline for about a week now, guess I should have mentioned that before. In the past I have tried Enderal, cortezone etc... ussually seems like these things just runb thier course 4-6 weeks. The more I hear about Oxygen treatment the more it sounds like the way to go. Thanks for the info, I am still reading and learning....gcb
