Title: Clusters, Pregnancy, and Meds Post by kandersen0822 on Oct 3rd, 2002, 6:02pm I am a chronic cluster sufferer, I don't go through a remision period. I am looking for a safe preventative to be on while I am trying to get pregnant. Has anyone heard of anything, or been on a preventative while they were pregnant? Right now I take Inderal for my preventative, and midrin for the abortive. They work wonderfully, but they are not safe for pregnancy... Any info would be great!!! |

Title: Re: Clusters, Pregnancy, and Meds Post by kim on Oct 3rd, 2002, 6:31pm Oxygen is a natural alternative to midrin as an abortive. I would advise looking up the oxygen method that is most effective - and that uses the non-rebreather mask. It aborts more than 60%...I'd definitely check it out. As for preventative - that is more difficult to assuage. Better ask neuro about that. Most preventatives I know of are strong medicine not to be taken while pregnant. Maybe someone will add their knowledge. I am episodic, so can't speak for chronic, but while pregnant, there was not one single sign of cluster headaches. It came back gang busters following birth, but the pregnancy was cluster free. Have you ever been pregnant b4? It can actually give you a break from the clusters..... Good luck to you! Smiles, Kim |

Title: Re: Clusters, Pregnancy, and Meds Post by maria on Oct 3rd, 2002, 8:23pm Kandersen, my history is from the episodic CH, can't speak for chronics, but from my perspective pregnancy is one of the best preventatives for CH available currently. I had CH for 22 years, yearly episodes, but during pregnancies - zilch, even if the pregnancy was during the time of year I would normally expect the cycle. The bad new is the CH's waited until after you had the baby, in my case 4 months, then you had to deal with the blessing as well as the beast. But hey it was worth it and honestly, I can't even remember waking up in the middle of the night with a CH and then waking up later to the cries of a hungry newborn. Maybe the nightly CH's and feeding were on the same 2 -3 hour schedule, I can't remember. Wishing you well. Maria |

Title: Re: Clusters, Pregnancy, and Meds Post by maria on Oct 4th, 2002, 8:41pm Kandersen, since you didn't receive many replies on this topic, you may want to do a search, type in *pregnancy* at the search button. I think there are others who had CH's during the pregnancy, and you may benefit from their information. If you are thinking of becoming pregnant in the near future you may want to start taking the prenatal vitamins now. I wish you well. Maria |
