Title: Prednisone effects
Post by joepauley on Oct 2nd, 2002, 2:44pm
Am I the only one who gets kinda giddy from taking prednisone? I just started on it 6 days ago, and I'm on 20mg, 3X per day. I'll be stepping down beginning in about a week, but in the meantime I feel giddy, giggly, but tense and have a bizarre (though not entirely unpleasant) pressure in my head. It's almost like being a wide-awake drunk.

Very strange.

Joepauley,

Sounds like a Sly Stallone impression in Rocky, calling his cousin - joe!  pauley!

Prednisone usually gives me a pretty short fuse.  If ya know what I mean.  I get a little bitchy (like some others around here who aren't on pred.).

Yes Joepauley, prednisone can cause strange effects in some individuals. When Mopar was first prescribed prednisone, I thought he had become someone else. Kept wanting to shake him and ask " Who are YOU?What have you done with Mopar?"
As he was on it for 8 months, things were a bit grim for that time. However, he stopped taking it; Mopar returned within days and the excess weight he'd acquired dropped off over a month or so.
It DID stop his headaches for several weeks and reduced the number  occurring for up to 7 months. He did seem much much worse when he stopped tho' - became chronic, and had HA two and a half hours apart for weeks. He would be reluctant to use it again, but it might yet be necessary, but at least we now know what to expect. I think it effects different people in different ways as friends who've taken it for asthma say it has them bouncing off the ceilings. Others comment that it makes them irrational, unreasonable and aggressive.
Guess each person has to see how it effects them personally.
Good luck and PFDAN
You crack me right up Bob P!!!! Falling over laughing here!

I tried the pred too, and truthfully cannot remember any ill effects.  It stopped the pain while I was on it.  Pain came back at the end of the taper.

My experience with Pred was like Sherry's:

Held the CH's down while I was taking it, no side effects noticed.

Took several courses of pred over the years.  Short courses - like 10-12 duration didn't have any effect.  It did stop the ch for the first 8-9 days or so tho.

I took one course of pred for 30 days.  Don't remember the schedule but I turned into Roseanne Barr with PMS.  First couple of weeks were o.k.  I was very wired, only slept about 4 hours per nite and never felt tired.   After that, BITCH.

Good luck.  Wishing you all PFDAN always, Linda T

Joepauley,

Prednisone is an extremely powerful drug that can have many side effects.  I get "jacked up" from it - very hyper, sweaty, and sometimes almost manic.  It can also make you angry/bitchy and almost sociopathic (not me thank god).  Good luck with the treatment.

Chris
