Title: What wakes us up?
Post by barbee on Sep 11th, 2002, 4:16am
??? ???

If you are like me, you wake up at 2 or 3 AM without a headache.  It hits one minute later, and builds up from a whisper to a long blast that lasts one or two hours.  It takes only a minute to make the transitionl.  But why do we wake up?

Conditioning, instinct all due to the CHs
and the nitemares, always the nitemares

If I'm not mistaken, the hypothalamus plays an important role in regulating sleep and wake patterns.  Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.

My theory is that there is a cascade of chemical and physical changes in the minute or so before the pain starts, and this wakes some people.  For me, it is usually the pain that wakes me.

Sleep and CH are weirdly intertwined. A few weeks before my clusters start, I start waking up earlier and earlier.  I feel awake, and initially think it is Good Thing (TM), as I can get more done, don't feel groggy or tired.  But if its part of my seasonal nightmare, I eventually wake up with a CH. This year I went almost a month of less than normal sleep before the headaches started.

Somebody mentioned the hypothalamus, and there is evidence for that.  Also, low melatonin.  But I don't know that these are the real causes, or effects.

Speaking of waking with the beast.  Has anybody ever awakened (this was out of cycle for me) with say about a kip 5 and it disappears as soon as you stand up?  I had this happen a few times a couple of months before a cycle.

When mine start, I'm having a nightmare where something that I'm dreaming about is causing the pain.  When I wake up I'm usually disoriented and try to find what it was (from the nightmare) that caused it to start, and destroy it.

The last time, I was laying on a salt flat in the middle of nowhere, and 10 ton I beams were falling on my head...

i was looking for Svens recipe when came across this message what wakes you up , I have a therory , when we sleep in a very deep sleep we must shallow breathe or have obstructed breathing so our Oxygen levels get very low, question- my snoring !! has changed since the clusters so I am awaiting results from the sleep clinic, had a oxymeter strapped to me for a night , typical couldn't get to sleep then when I did cluster started had to take maxalt, but when eventually went back to sleep and deeply the alarms went off on the machine to say the levels had dropped. so i'm thinking may be this could just be one of the many reasons. I think also because we are all frightened to go to sleep when we finally do we are so tired to breathe properly. I suppose we just clutch to any reason don't we?

You're not alone Sherry. I can think of at least twice where I've gotten out of bed and the attack just ended. It may have something to do with circulation like when one gets up too fast and nearly or does fall over.

Why do we wake up...is a damn good question. I frankly don't know but I kind of like the chemical thing.  I have dreams now and then where I'm getting hurt (gun fire, car and airplane crashes and the like) but I don't feel the pain. I think I do, I'm scared silly, and worried that I will,  but the back of my mind, during the dream, I seem to realize,  I that I won't. If only our CH were like my dreams. What a deal that we wake for this. >:(

I noticed that a few weeks before my CH cycle begins I become depressed with no apparent reason and start to wake up around 1 AM a few times a week with a "regular" headache.

Outside of my cycle that I hardly get any headaches at all.. I also remember as a young child getting what I would describe to my mom as a "headache-earache-toothache" on one side. She thought it was an excuse to stay home from school...lol

Any of this sound familiar to ya'll?

I usually wake up with a full blown CH from a dead sleep.   :o

Sherry when I was 7 and started having a CH, I would call home at 11:00 every day.  My Mom decided the HA was caused by me needing to eat because by the time she got me back home the HA was gone.
