Post by DougL on Sep 9th, 2002, 5:23pm

Other than O2 and triptans or the nasty pain meds.

Im back in cycle and can only get 2rx of initrex a month and O2 does not work for me.

Doug,

I do not know if it qualifies as the "next best thing", but Cafergot works great for BobP and me as an abortive.  it actually worked quiker for me than the triptans ( other than the imitrix shot).

Hi Doug,

provide more informations about:

- for how many years did you suffer ?
- what kind of meds did you try so far and their dosages ?
- are you episodic or chronic ?
- did you already read all the informations you get on the left ?
- how do/did you use the O2 and what kind of mask do/did you have ?

Then let's look again...

Doug,

Agree with Slammy.  If O2 doesn't work and the triptans are out, the ergots are about the only abortives left.

You can get cafergot in tablet or supository forms.  The supository is faster acting and more is absorbed that the tablet form.

When I feel one coming, I pop a tablet of cafergot and get on the O2.  The O2 either stops or at least holds the attack at bay until the cafergot kicks in (15-20 minutes for me).

Same for myself, O2 is my first choice, but I'll use the ergot for the ones that don't respond to oxygen.   Ergot is always my first choice for daytime CH when I'm away from the O2.

Interesting side note, if I use an ergot on the first CH of the night (usually 3 - 5 for me), I usually get a good sleep for the balance of THAT night.

Bad side note, took too many once, years ago, (#6 that day, >15 that week), had a mild heart attack.  Gotta love those coronary artery spasms, should have believed that label!

Give it a try DougL

Doug,

Same with me.  Last cluster I tried the 1/2 dose Imitrex shots.  I was up 4 times that night, injecting.  I felt like crap the next day.

With cafergot, I take a tab for the attack that always wakes me up 1 1/2 hours after going to sleep.  Once it kicks in, I go back to bed and sleep the rest of the night.

Last cluster I tried all the triptans, Zomig, Amerge, Imitrex, Maxalt.  I wound up with the longest cluster period ever, 15 weeks.  Next cluster I'm going straight to the O2 and cafergot!

BTW - I've taken as many as 30 tabs/week.  Only side effect was cold fingers and toes.  Sure pisses the doctor off when I take that much.  I do know a guy who wound up in the hospital with his toes turning black from taking too much though.

I will say that when I was first diagnosed 14yrs ago I tryed them both. To no avail.
However may be worth retrying thow.

I usually alternate between imitrix, zomig, and axert.  If triptans are out for you you might want to try migranol ns.  good luck and praying you find relief soon.

Doug:  I use the 2 mg cafergot (2 mg ergot + caffine).  The caffine speeds the absorption into the blood stream.  I find it works best if I moisten my mouth, bite the tab to crush it and then move the tablet under the tongue.  Tastes awful, but works.

And, I get to stay on the O2 while the ergot kicks in.
