Title: Stadol
Post by HypnoticFreddy on Aug 28th, 2002, 11:00pm
I am wondering what yer'all opinion is on Stadol. Is it so addictive? Does it knock you down? How fast does it act? Oxygen doesnt seem to be doing the trick for me. I am on 360 mg of Verapamil/day. I occasionally use the NS Imitrex. I dont know, it seems useless.

Well, it doesn't take away the pain but it does give you an unpleasant high and makes you feel sick. I think its benefit is that when you get your next attack and don't use it you have that relief as you tell yourself "At least I'm not on Stadol too."

I have stadol and as a matter of fact I'm the only one that my Neuro will give a scrip for it....yes it's very addictive if use alot.  I would think that before you do that ask about the Migranol (DHE45) nasal spray in my opinion I think it works better for me and also faster....Stadol just puts you in a place that you can deal with a 10 but it won't stop it nor will it stop the pain.....I don't really like the hang over effect it gives you but I've used it about 4 times in 7 weeks with the Imitrex or Dhe didn't work.....I'm one of the ones that preventives just don't work for me so I have to rely on abortives.....Good luck.....Sami

I've only had Stadol once and that was enough.  It was in the form of an injection and it made me so sick I thought I was dying.  It was a horrible experience and I definitely won't try it again.

My neuro gives me 1 bottle a month.  I go through it in a week.  Mind you I get 8 ha a day and I have no preventative.  I do not find it addictive mentally or physically however I do know that I have built up a tollerance to it to the point where I quit taking it a month ago.  I found a tollerance built up quickly for me.  I had no problem to stop using it.  I did find that it worked within 15 min. max. It made me very tired to the point where I would have to sleep.  Which was good then I didn't feel the pain.  Sometimes I was able to stay awake and it aborted the ha but yet at the same time makes you feel very drugged up.  Small price to pay for pain relief.  I never got sick while using it.

Hi,

My brother has taken it (he's been chronic for 5 years), but will only do so in extreme emergencies.  He says the feeling it gives him is awful and it also gives him a very bad hangover.

I use it whenever I cannot stand the CH any longer.  Neuro give me 2 bottles per month max.  During a bad cycle I can use the 2 within a week to 10 days.  I have been hooked in the past - years ago- when there was no limitation to the amount of Rx's filled.  Recently I have begun watering it down with distilled water to lessen the queezy effect.  For me Stadol will downgrade a 10 to a 4 in about 15 seconds.  (Full strength - 2 hits) or 10 to a 6 in a minute - two hits.

downside -- 2 full strength hits will have me puking up my socks within 10 minutes.

Stadol, (In my humble opinion) is not a very good med for Cluster Headache. For one thing , it will give you a disphoric feeling. Also, it doesn't do much for pain. Makes you very tired, yet you can't fall asleep. If you haven't started to use stadol, I would stay away from it. Even if you find it works, the doctors probably won't prescribe it for long...

With all due respect to the other messages...I am a big supporter of Stadol. I'm 37 years old, and have suffered from CHs since I was 13. Nothing works faster (not even a shot of Demerol in the butt). Again, you must be very careful with it, as it is very addictive. If you take the recommended dose, you shouldn't have a problem.

Remember, People react differently!

xavier,  love the side pic.  Another stadol user -- there are few of us.

Marshall - sorry to read you have sleep problems with it.  For me -- I could sleep through a train wreck when using.

I wish I could...It did get me feeling very drowsy. But when it came time to sleep I couldn't. It seemed like someone mixed it with a bunch of caffeine. But, people react differently with meds.
