Title: Warning to Shroom Pickers
Post by tommyD on May 15th, 2002, 12:03pm
A story in today's local paper says sheriff's deputies in Brooke County, West Virginia caught 100 people picking wild shrooms and will charge about 80 of them. The shrooms were growing on some land owned by Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel; the firm is cooperating with authorities and has posted security guards on the remote property.

The area has long been known as a shroom-picking spot, but this year a whole lot of people from WVa., Ohio and Pa. showed up, attracting the attention of law enforcement.

In West Virginia, possession of shrooms is a misdemeanor, carrying penalties of three to six months in the pokey & up to $1,000 fine.

The lesson: buy the spores and grow your own! And if you know of a good pasture, keep it quiet. This kind of bust could inspire other law enforcement types to focus on shroom pickers.

Be careful out there!

And by the way, in the immortal words of Chuck Berry: "It wasn't me, Sheriff..."
