Title: Meds and Insurance
Post by Tom K on Apr 24th, 2002, 6:35pm
Hey Everybody!  I have found something pretty interesting in the last few weeks.  Please remember that I am not bragging, just trying to help everyone out!  My Dr. wrote my scripts as:  "For the treatment of Cluster Headaches...".  In the Refills area, he wrote "Yes".  During this last series I have been going through 2 Imitrex Injector packs, 1 box of Imitrex Nasal, I box of Imitrex tabs and a box of Zomig tabs a week for the last 5 weeks.  I have only been charged my copay for the meds EVERYTIME!!!  I don't know if my insurance company (Atena PPO) recognizes Clusters, or if it is because of the Refills: YES or what.  I was just passing the info along to try to help fellow Clusterheads!!

Hopin' for PFD's in the near future and maybe some pharm. company will find a cure insead of trying to make money off of us!!

Hi Tom,

I'm glad to hear things are working out with your medication.  I think it depends on which insurance or prescription drug plan you're on.  I have the same insurance as you, with Merck-Medco drug prescription plan.

They only allow 800mg of Imitrex per month.  I need about 3000mg. So now I am appealing, and according to my doctor, they cannot deny it as long as I don't go over the manufactures maximum daily dosage - 200mg per day.

My cycles last for 8-10 weeks usually. If I win the appeal, I will continue to get Imitrex so when the next cycle hits I am stocked up.

Good luck,

Douglas

Tom and Douglas....just a little food for thought - - -  When I am not in my cycle I continue to refill all of Rx - especially for those that the insurance company controls the amount of refills (injections and abortives)...that way I never have to worry about having enough during a cycle.

Glad to hear Douglas that you are able to get your meds on a somewhat regular basis  ;D

Keep the faith....
