Title: Standing On Cold Floor?
Post by kim on Apr 6th, 2002, 9:04am
I read somewhere here that relief has been accomplished by standing on cold floor.  Last night after doing my usual habitual ritual with no results, I threw on my bathrobe and armed with my cup of strong coffee, removed my socks and stepped out on back porch.  I stood there....and stood there...and stood there.  I swigged the last of the coffee.  I tried to deep breath....(At some point I had the urge to run around the block, but I supressed this, after all it was late and I WAS in bathrobe...)  Finally, I cursed the demon and the night, threw my coffee cup in the woods and stumped back in the house to do some more rocking and drooling.  Eventually it went away.   The night creatures were treated to a show last night, that's about it...

Next time you have that urge, throw off the bathrobe and run, run, run. It won't help your headache but that strange old man down the block will be thrilled.

And, if you live on my block, Thursday evenings between 7 and 8 o'clock would be nice. Please run slowly. I'm old and can't see very fast.

P.S.  I like the phrase habitual ritual

Hi Liz,
I know, i DID jinx myself  :'(.  Maybe it was a fluke...Was pooped out today - mopey.  It is surprising that the low dose of neurontin seemed to be giving me some help.  OR, Liz, it could just be that the beast is not goin for bust this cycle, you know?  In any event I was let down by last night's late visitor!
Hope things are good with you!
Kim :)

Kim......I have had success with "COLD FEET".....here is what has been VERY helpful to me.....in stopping an attack once it has started......

When I am wakened by the start of a cluster ..... I rush to the bathroom and run cold water in the tub (my water is quite cold....in the high 40's)...and stand in that 1/2 in deep water until my feet feel like they are beginning to hurt ........... then I pat them dry (not thoroughly dry).....I then GO BACK TO BED...with my feet OUTSIDE of the covers .....but I am covered up normally elsewhere......I even have a fan blowing on my feet.  I try to keep my legs straight and my toes pointing up in the air....I also try to raise my head off of the pillow like 1/8 of an inch so there is a little muscle tension in my neck....and I concentrate on the tingling in my feet.   If I have been successful....the headache disapates in 4 to 6 minutes.......never having it reach any painful level....This method is successful for me I'd say around 50-6o % of the time....depends on how early I catch it....but it does work!!!!!!!!!!!!  I hope this is helpful

Hi rick, that is one method i have not tried!  I am used to running to the bathroom to run Hot water (i get severe muscle cramping in my neck).  I get in the hot water and splash my neck and put hot rag on it.  Then I get out of the tub and start with the ice paks to areas of pain in head and face.  The things we all do to try and do battle with the onslaught of pain!  I'll give your idea a try and let you know what happens.  Lately, I'm only shadowing and getting kip 5-6 - usually early evening (between dinner and bedtime).  Be well! :)

kim you got a fridge with a freezer at the top?
get a towel or baby blanket  that is the same size as the freezer door. cut a hole in the centre the size of your head so it fits like a' T shirt,  open freezer door and use fridge magnets to attach the towel over the front of the freezercompartment,  then turn thermostat to freezer to coldest, the fan inside the freezer will start producing large amounts of stone cold air, now stick head thru hole on towel, for as long as you can stand it  helped relieve some of mine at times .
maybe worth a try. ERIK.

Hey Kim,

I have two of those ice blue cold pack things,,, one of my "habitual rituals" as you call it is to put one on the floor and step on it with my bare feet. I only use one cold pack at a time so i have back up, but i will keep my foot on there as long as i can, then switch feet and do the same thing. I usually do that till the cold back gives up then i hit the pace again, burn a couple, walk the stairs, drink coffee and so on.

Has worked in the past but like everything else, not all the time.

btw I tried to throw my cup in the woods but i have a screened in balcony so that didnt work out to good. There was broken coffee cup everywhere. I actually thought about walking over that to see if i could get some relief.  ;D

mo lata ,,,,greg

Right now, I'm giggling like a goon picturing all us clusterheads in fast motion (like an old silent movie)!!!  :o I mean, aside from the complete AGONY we suffer, it's HILARIOUS!!!  I mean, people with diabetes don't have to do these things!!!!  Good LORD!!! What the ---- ???
And on top of THAT, I'm sick of looking at my splotcy red-nosed, lanky haired, washed out, icky looking self!  In an outa the tub, walk around glugging coffee like a fiend, smoking butts, biting nails, EGADS! ::)
Remember Mel Brooks - LIFE STINKS!!!LOL
Crooked smile from chick with very red forehead! :D

Kim,

I think we all should get together, share O2 masks, beat on each others pounding or boring ice pick like right or left temples, give each other imitrex shots, and later celebrate our remissions together.

After reading the cold water in bathtub thing, I tried the ice pack on the bottom of the feet thing.

AND IT HELPS!  Amazing.  You want a laugh, check me out with the tabasco up the nose and the ice pack on the feet! hehehe  (but they do work, and even thought Paco would never put it up his nose, it doesn't work under the tongue for me and up the nose does.  Also I like the burning feeling in the nose, great distraction)

Fight, Fight, Fight!

Me niether-- i dont think i could handle that. But if it works for you--go on wit your bad self  :D

How do you get the burning to stop or does it just go away?  I can deffinately see where it could be a good diversionary (sp?) tactic.

Kim,

One of the things I fould helpful in the years before abortives and  medication was available for dealing with this formidable beast was to go outside in the cold air with an ice pack on my head and take deep breaths for 5 min. or so, I guess in an attempt to get oxygen to those oxygen deprived veins in the brain.

I also tried Capsaicin creme in the nostril (capsaicin is derived from red pepper, usually used for arthritis pain, which is supposed to temporarily stimulate release of various neurotransmitters from these nerves, leading to their depletion.  Thus without the neurotransmitters pain signals can't be sent.)  I really can't say if this was successful or not as I used my finger to administer the nostril dose instead of a cue-tip or cotton swab and later rubbed my eyes causing a whole new cause of pain. I was reluctant to try this again. But this may be useful for others to try (use a cue-tip ;D) and is readily available in your neighborhool drug store.

Anyone want my neurotransmitters--- they work real good :)

Hey speaking of the cold air thing Maria-- another thing i do sometimes is put a couple drops of visene (SP?) in my right eye so that when the cold air from the freezer hits it it seems to give some relief. Also i noticed that if i can get my eye to tear up and just let the tears roll down my cheek it seems to help lessen the pain. The eye drops help get this going too.

Believe me i have tried ALOT o things to get rid of the pain. Just can seem find one thing that works all the time. (except imitrex shots, but i cant get enough so that falls into the doesnt work all the time catagory)

aaaaite...
