Title: Re: question for nancyc Post by Tom on Apr 3rd, 2002, 1:59pm Hi Charles, as Nancy is to busy with her grandbaby now, she asked me by e-mail to answer your question, so I'll try to do so: Prof. Goadsby's team in London is performing a clinical trial about a possible (abortive?) treatment of CH with octreotide (Sandostatin®), an artificial analog of the human pancreatic hormone somatostatin. The latter is the antagonist of somatotropin, the "growth hormone", produced in the pituitary gland of the brain. Years ago octreotide was synthesized as a drug for the treatment of pituitary tumors respectively their symptoms. With the time patients and doctors observed an improvement of the severe headaches patients with pituitary tumors usually have, and now somebody got the idea to apply octreotide in the treatment of CH, too. The preliminary results of the a.m. clinical trial seem to be very promissing, so far. The CH fellows from ch.org.uk probably know more about this argument. For more informations about octreotide look at www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic2/octreotide.htm and also into the Google. Thomas |
