Anyone else tried Doxepin? My doc prescribed it as a preventative measure when all the various triptans seem to be doing nothing. I guess this is some sort of anti-depressant that helps the brain shutdown CH. I've been on it for 3 days now and haven't had a CH once (usually get 2-5 a day when my episodes are in full swing). I can tell when I should be getting a CH as I feel a slight shadow along with my neck totally tightening up but it never progresses beyond that. The first day I was on Doxepin, I was totally knocked out. I slept almost the whole day. After that, I feel normal. So far so good.

Pete, i have never tried it or heard of it being used for chs...but i am willing to try anything at this point...please copy down my email and keep me posted on how you do on it...i am going to a new neuro soon ....thanks alot and good luck...smiles,nancyc crnnurse12@aol.com

Pete, please keep the board posted on your progress with this medicine. I have never heard of it much less how it would help cluster headaches. I am sure others are curious as well as to how it will help you out. Good luck.

Doxepin is now called depakote, the doxipen made people sick to their stomachs so the manufacturer pur a shell coating on it and changed the name to depakote, pappy ;Dhttp://www.gifs.net/animate/sungulls.gif

I haven't found anything to indicate they are the same. My chemistry is sketchy but I think they are actually different compounds with very little in common.

"Divalproex sodium (Depakote) is a stable co-ordination compound comprised of sodium valproate and valproic acid. Chemically it is designated as sodium hydrogen bis (2-propylpentanoate)."

This compound appears to have a different molecular makeup as well: C16H31NO3 as compared to Doxepin's C19H21NO...but then again I got a C in Chemistry. ;)

"Doxepin HCl is one of a class of psychotherapeutic agents known as dibenzoxepin tricyclic compounds."

The quoted info I found on www.rxlist.com. Regardless of what it is now or what it once was, it seems to be working...hallelujah!
