Title: What Oxygen mask to use?
Post by Shane on Feb 20th, 2002, 11:52pm
Hello to all who battle the beast,
Can someone help me? What oxygen mask is the best to use? What flow rate? My set-up has a simple regulator that adjusts from .5 to 8. .5 to 8 what, I don't know.
Any help would be very welcome at this point.
:)Shane

You want to get a NON-rebreather mask. And set the liter flow (that's what your .5-8 refers to) all the way up. Generally 8 is considered to be the lowest you should use. 8-10 liters per minute is the norm, although that gets exceeded too. Are you renting or did you buy? What's your system? Liquid O2, compressed or a concentrator? If you're renting and you find 8 isn't enough, although hopefully it will be, have the place you're renting from give you a regulator that goes into the double digits. If the regulator is not seperate from the O2 tank, get a second one and piggy back it by getting a coupler hose that will lead to one main hose. If the 8 l p/m is working, don't waste your time on anything I just said.

You can also get a demand valve and mask.  The oxygen does not free flow.  It is delivered when you take a breath.  Works with a tank.  I set my oxygen generator at 5 liters and sleep with a mask or nasal prongs.  I doubt that that level of oxygen would do damage to otherwise normal lungs.
