Title: Chronic CH--new treatment??--Clomiphene

Just a trial but something to watch.......

Headache. 2007 Dec 7 [Epub ahead of print]
Clomiphene Citrate for Treatment Refractory Chronic Cluster Headache.

Rozen T.

Michigan Head Pain and Neurological Institute, Ann Arbor, MI, USA.

A treatment refractory chronic cluster headache patient is presented who became cluster-free on clomiphene citrate. The author has previously reported a SUNCT patient responding to clomiphene citrate. Hypothalamic hormonal modulation therapy with clomiphene citrate may become a new preventive choice for trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias. The possible mechanism of action of clomiphene citrate for cluster headache prevention will be discussed.

Danielle:

I'll try.  It's a drug that is often given to women who are infertile. It tells the body that there isn't enough estrogen in the system and causes the body to produce more.  The hypothalamus is thought to malfunction with cluster headaches and this drug is thought to change the way it functions.

It seems as though it helped one person who was not helped by any other means (refractory) with chronic cluster headaches and one with SUNCT.

These results imply to me that more research is needed and is another thing to try in some refractory cases.

Did that make any sense?

Ray

PS This explanation is subject to corrections by others who are more in the know than I.

More research is always needed. I think federal law requires those words to be added to all studies. ;)

The effects are probably quite different in men than women. It blocks estrogen and increases gonadotropin-releasing hormone.  In men, this probably increase testosterone. In women, it is more likely to increase FSH and LH.

Body builders also sometimes use this in their cycles to prevent bitchtits.
