Title: Arthrexin works for me...
Post by Jacko on Nov 11th, 2007, 4:05pm
My first post...brings a tear to my eye, make that a gushing torrent...

I have recently been diagnosed as having Cluster headaches. My doc has prescribed the anti-inflammatory Arthrexin (Indomethacin capsules) and they seem to work! I take one at the onset of pain and it nips it in the bud. The pain shifted from one side of my head to the other when I started using them. I use an ice pack to alleviate pain while waiting for the Arthrexin to kick in.

I am very glad that you are finding relief for your pain.
It is quite possible that you suffer from Paroxysmanl hemicrania which is another evil sister of CH.

It presents similarly to CH yet more frequent and lesser in duration.
It is near 100% responsive to indomethacin where CH is not.

Wishing you the best,

E

G’day Jacko

I see from your profile that you’re a Crow Eater; I’m an expat Crow eater myself been over here in the west since 1968.

From what you’ve said it doesn’t sound like CH, I wouldn’t be just relying on your Doc for diagnosis; he/she should be referring you onto a reputable Nuro who should get an MRI carried out to rule out any other sinister lurkers in the noggin.

Take the cluster quiz from the links to the left it’s a bloody good indicator as to you having clusters or not, if your Doc refuses to refer you to a Nuro go find another Vet because as rare as this condition is there’s a good bet the Doc has never come across the condition before.

Let’s know how you get on.
Cheers
Barry

Hi Guys, thanks for your advice Barry....I will check out the Evil Sister, thanks E.

I did the Cluster Quiz, I was one answer short of 100%.

I have been getting migraines over the past 10 years or so, these new headaches are different, symptoms of a CH, and don't respond to my migraine meds, Imigran & preventative Deralin.

I think I know what has caused the onset; a build up of stress, the same thing that always brought on my migraines, and/or lots of computer screen time (work) and/or broken sleep for extended periods (baby).

I have used meditation and calmness to relieve stress in the past, to the point of being able to get off my migraine meds. Obviously I have slipped and need to get meditated every day!

I will see another doc in a few days...Thanks again guys, it's nice that you share your experience, cheers!

Jacko you could score almost perfect for CH and have PH as they belong to the same group of headaches, TACS or Trigeminal Autonomic Cephalalgias.

The pain and autonomic symptoms are pretty much the same but what changes is the length of attack and frequency.. With PH you normally have more attacks each day but of shorter duration.

PH is also very responsive to Indo as previously mentioned whereas CH isn't. I do know of ch'ers that it has worked for for one or two cycles but thats a very long way from the norm.

One of our most eminent neuro's in the CH field, Professor Goadsby has said he see's the three TAC's as being on a line and we, being the sufferer, can swing in different directions for different cycles. We all know this thing seems to "mutate" so that's a logical thought but it also means that it's always worth trying meds or re-trying ones that haven't worked in the past.

One thing I would add to the "See a headache specialist neuro" comment is that with pain as severe as this you SHOULD have an MRI to rule out anything more insidious. It also amuses me every time someone comes back and says they had an MRI but the docs didn't find anything  ;) Just humour me!

Good luck, let us know how you're doing okay?

Helen

Jacko, welcome to the best place on earth for CH sufferers.  I have had CH for over 20 years and recently have battled PH.  I too am on indocin and responding well.  Let's hope that this is the case for you as I find that PH is a hell of lot more controllable then CH.  Just watch out for stomach problems with the indocin.  I take it with food to try and keep the "runs" to a minimum.

Let's mention oxygen at least once.

I am not sure what the research shows using oxygen for PH versus CH.  I did not have as much success with O2 this particular cycle, which I suspect is a PH cycle.  Obviously, everyone should try it as an abortive as we are all different, but I just wanted to throw it out there.

Wow, thanks heaps folks for your comments and advice, very much appreciated.

I have checked out PH on the net and it certainly is a closer match. I will get back to the doc in the next few days and see what he says about an MRI. I had one about 10 years ago at the onset of migraines, they found nothing.....!

Cheers,
Jacko

Keep us updated with whatever you find out, Jacko! We tend to worry a bit about people we don't hear from again...

Best of luck to you!
Adam
