Title: trex/imigran advice
Post by aloneuk on Nov 8th, 2007, 6:52am
hiya

Thought id ask your advice,
I have got the script for the right needles and and syringes for my sumatriptan but no pharmacy will give them to me they all say "sorry we don't have them" "everyone uses the auto inject so we don't keep needles" "and we cant order them sorry", "no diabetic uses needles anymore" "blame glaxo "

So now i don't know what to do i got the script but cant use it

Any ideas ?

(i don't use the auto inject, I'm using single dose vials of trex and using half dose's so i can use more in the 24hrs without going over the 12mg limit)

This seems to be working SO much better and i don't seem to get the rebounds and the side effects are much less,

Now I'm out of needles that the doc gave me, Got the script but can't use it anywhere, I've tried all 5 pharmacies in town and none of them will give them to me.

Ike...

You cannot get needles at all where you are?

That sounds strange because people use needles for more than just diabetes. I can think of a few medications that come in vials and not auto injector kits.

Do you have to have a prescription for needles?

I know that in the US, states are all different. Some require prescriptions while some do not. And I know that here in Sweden you do have to have a script for them. Maybe that is the problem there.  :-/

Just a thought. Sorry that you are having trouble.

Jill i have the script for them but pharmacy wont give me them they say they cant get them..

Helen there is one script for needles saying

"Hypodermic needle, single use 0.5x 16mm"

The other script says

"single use syringe tuberkulin 1ml/solo"

Is that what you need ?

I just thought great now I've got the script i need it will all be ok i had no idea id have all this hassle getting them

Thanx Helen

I'd post your problem on  the OUCH UK site.

http://www.ouchuk.org

You will be asking folks who know your system.

The local chemists here say the length (16mm) is not the norm, the norm is 8mm. They would have to order them in for you but they can't order them without the prescription so you have two choices - get the prescription up to me and I'll get it filled or go back to your doc and ask for 8mm syringes (which they have in stock here in Bingham)

Hope that helps!!
Helen

Helen,

I've been on the phone with me doc and she said i need the 16mm ones because imigran needs to be injected into the muscle and the 8mm are too short.

She said that the ones used in the auto inject are 16mm also?

She also told me to try tesco because they should be able to get them so i have put in the script there and should be able to pick them up in the morning. the lady there wasn't sure if they have them or not but ill find out in the morning..

If they cant ill send the script to you if thats still ok?

Thank you very much for your help  your one in a million

Ike - imigran/trex is subcutaneous hon, its not an "into muscle" drug  [smiley=huh.gif] Your doctor iswrong on that bit. Look here and you'll see it's not just my word.

How to use this medicine section

If you get no joy then send them to me by all means - I wouldn't have offered if it wasn't okay!

Please don't inject it that deep though okay?

I agree with Helen here Ike.

The needle length that protrudes from the imigran (sorry imitrex) pen is 6mm, therefore 8mm is more than enough.

I'd get the prescription changed if I were you.

PS I didn't know you could get sumatriptan vials in the UK, how much imi is in them?

SteveY check your pm's  :)

Helen I'm pissed now ! So I've used this like this lots of times over the last week or so and I've been injecting it into the muscle, FFS doctors are shit sometimes they really are,

I was told by two different doctors to inject into the muscle,

I shall be at the doctors in the morning !

Thanx for the heads up Helen !

I may well give you a ring tomorrow if your about?

Ike:

I would have given advice similar to Helen, so listen to her!  She's in the know about this.  Can you provide an update to what went on?

The problem is in the UK Stacey and it was caused by the GP being unfamilar with what we need and giving a prescription for needles for very deep injections as opposed to subcutaneous ones. Usually it taes someone else such as a nurse to give those so pharmacies don't stock them - just hospitals etc.

Ike-

They can special order them through their drug supplier and "no one uses needles for insulin" is BS!

Fisher scientific sells 1/2 ml insulin syringes in bulk individual wrap sterile.

I managed to get it sorted, The nurse at my doctors is just giving them to me, I explained the problem and she said just come and see me when ever you need them and ill give you them.

None of the chemists here will do them, im amazed how hard it is to get something like that and to be honest each chemist looked at me like i was an addict and made me feel really small  :-[

But for the moment its sorted shame it had to be like this tho huh?

cheers for your help

Ike
