Dear Canes93:

Lidocaine (xylocaine) is a local anesthetic that is used for various purposes. The numbing shot that one might get at the dentist, or before receiving stitches for a wound often contains this medication.

The object of this medication in the context of CH is to numb an area called the sphenopaletine (did I spell this right?) ganglion, this numbing medicine then travels up the nerves and hopefully turns off the pain.

I had limited success with this technique, however it requires you to lay flat on your back, with your head lower than your body, with your head rotated towards the painful side. This made the early part of the cluster attack about 10x worse for me. You must hold this position for 5 to 10 minutes.

If oxygen and the triptan family of medications don't work for you, it is worth a try.

What Ray said! I tried it in the early 80's, it made me barf and at best would only slightly reduce the pain. Oxygen has proven a gazillion times more effective for me. Good luck. ;;D

Whats up Canes,

About 10 years ago I had Lidocain drops.I was told to lay on my back and drop then in the affected side.My opinion.Worthless.
