Title: Not CH  Drug Question
Post by thebbz on Jun 15th, 2007, 6:18pm
Okey dokey
My wife has a hypothyroid condition. This requires daily doses of synthroid. This has worked for 20 years. She has always used trademark medication synthroid. So with no insurance at the present time she was looking to save a few dollars and asked the drug peddler at the counter about generics. His reply was based on some study indicating no difference between synthroid and levothyroxine. She saved some money but now is experiencing some emotional distress and tiredness. We think may be due to the generic form of the drug.
Do any of you have some insight into this, or some experience related to this?
I know there is vast knowedge of medications here.
What say you?
thanks in advance

I do not however, generic meds may have different "inactive" ingrediants which still may change the way people metabolize.

Sorry bro.

Hi
I have taken both, am on  levothyroxine now. I never noticed any differance. She may need to have here TSH tested again, there are also a lot of meds rx or over the counter that can interact with them. Is she taking it on a empty stomach??? You should take it on an empty stomach and wait 2 hrs before eating or wait 2 hours after eating.

I have also taken both and have to say that I will never go back to the generic med....my endocrinologist agrees and stated that he is constantly fighting with insurance companies to try to get clearance for his patients to receive Synthroid.

While on the generic med, I was tired all the time and felt generally lousy, down in the dumps, gloomy, etc.

One thing I'd like to pass along, I was instructed to not take my multi-vitamin within 4 hours after taking my Synthroid.  I also take the Synthroid first thing in the morning on an empty stomach as Becky mentioned.

I went from hyperthyroidism (which I have had for 35 years) to hypothyroidism (which started in the last 2 years) very quickly and, with no thanks to my Speed Racer metabolism, had a rough time getting my labs normal.  It's been a rough go of it but think things are finally calming down.

Tell your wife that I hope things begin looking up for her soon.  Thyroid disease is a rough one to live with....hyper or hypo....they are both can make our lives miserable but once under control, it's amazing how good we can feel.

If I can help in any way, do not hesitate to let me know.

Thank you all for your input.
I do take it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach and all other meds and vitamins at night with my dinner. I also have hypoglycemia so sometimes I have to eat before I am suppose to. We are pretty upbeat around here so the gloom and doom makes me feel bad for my husband as he worries about me when I am feeling emotional and out of the norm. I thank God for him as he takes really good care of me when I am icky. I will give the med one more week to make sure, if my negitive symptoms continue then I will know for sure thats what is doing it and I will gladly switch back to synthroid . Thanks again for you words.
I would also like to thank everyone for being there for my husband and all the other ch sufferers, what a horrible deal you all have to go through and I pray to God for all of you and your well being.
Thanks again
Joan
