Title: Verapamil Qustion for those taking 720mg
Post by JohnWF on May 28th, 2007, 5:04pm
My doctor has increased my Verapamil dosage from 480mg to 720mg (3 pills).  I'm wondering from folks who take this level of Verapamil, do you take the 3 pills spread out evenly thoughout the day or 1 in the morning and two at night?

I appreciate your help.

Thanks,

John

When my doc tried upping me to that dosage, I took it spread out, in 8-hour intervals. But I could only take it for about 3 days as I was starting to get light-headed and weak.

My husband is prescribed 240 mg 3 times per day, totalling 720 mg.

Taking 720 mg all at once, especially if its the immediate release version may cause dizziness as the dose is too large and it may not last the whole 24 hrs to give you round the clock protection.

Painfree wishes to you.

When it used to work for me, I spread it out to three times a day.

720mg in three 240mg (SR) doses - 7:00 AM, 2:00PM, 7:00PM.

Spent some time shifting the schedule around and tracking results until finding that this schedule provided me the most consistent results.

Also note that forgetting a dose of being late by more that an hour on a dose can increase CH activity that sometimes takes a day or two to resolve.

Best wishes,

Tom

Same here, three doses of 240mg SR.  The pharmacist says it lasts 12 hours but I find the covering to be closer to 10, so I try not to leave any gaps longer than 10 hrs.

7:00am, and then again at 5:00pm and10:00pm for a little extra overlapping coverage at night.

Agree with Tom also, in that missed doses can result in one and two day correction time, featuring the unwanted.

Thanks to all of you.  I've not been on 720mg before and am feeling a bit light-headed, as well as feeling like I have a level 1 cluster in the background.  It could just be today!

I 'm hoping this goes away as my system adjust.

I have always taken it all at once and dealt with the dizziness and lightheadedness.  Thought about spreading it out but it works for me so I have stuck with it.  Have actually gone as high as five pills.  That was tough as my heart rate was dangerously low.

Please double check with your doctor and maybe get an ECG ( cardiogram ) within 2 hrs of you taking your tablets. Having dangerously low heart rate is DANGEROUS, as you said yourself , you could go into arrthymia and get a heart attack.

Had it checked yesterday by my md.  HR was 65.  I have a home test kit and make sure my HR never goes below 60.

Agree with you Tom, not taking pills at the same time each day screws with me! Normally takes a few days to build defence again!
