Abstract
SYNOPSIS

The Dzidra Glass is a battery powered, self-contained eyeglass using two liquid crystals to cast shadows on the closed or open eyelids at a rate of 1 to 3 hz. They are designed to induce relaxation through slow wave photic stimulation with one to five minutes of use, without concomitant medications or prior relaxation training. This study reports the preliminary experience with this modality in the treatment of headache.

Fifteen patients with acute muscle-contraction type headache, six patients with chronic muscle-contraction type headache, three patients with headache associated with acute sinusitis, and four patients with migraine were treated with the Dzidra glasses for five minutes. Fourteen of fifteen patients with acute muscle-contraction type headache and five of six patients with chronic muscle-contraction type headache and five of six patients with chronic muscle-contraction type headache noted complete relief after treatment. One patient with chronic muscle contraction type headache and all patients' with headache associated with acute sinusitis and migraine headache noted no relief after treatment. Four patients with acute muscle-contraction type headache were treated in a placebo-controlled trial. None of the four responded to placebo, but all responded to treatment with slow wave photic stimulation.

We conclude that in this preliminary report, slow wave photic stimulation appears to be effective in the treatment of acute and chronic muscle-contraction type headache.

Theese things really work, there drug free and feel like an acid or shroom trip! Thats from my really young days, 20 years ago.. I'm looking for the article I found on one of the EMDR sites about the improvements the L&S devices had on migraine suffers, 80% had varying degrees of relief. I will post it when I find it.

I don't really know, I got one and it has helped me alot. They are a lot cheeper than the triptans. You can get a low end one for $100. I'm not trying to sell them, just pass on the idea. If new ideas are not your thing, that's fine too.

Rolo, first off it is very nice to meet you (so to speak).

The technology that you are speaking of has been around for a very long time.

I have owned one since my Clusters started (20 yrs.+) give or take a couple. I am no Flo :o. , but I am reading from the manual which I still have with the machine.

Manufactured by "radio shack", brand name "Inner Quest".

I have the model IQ~3, they do indeed create very trip like visuals as well as being able under the right conditions to induce many different brain wave patterns. mine can do Beta-Alpha Wave, Deep Alpha-theta wave,  Theta learning, deep relaxation, etc. A total of 16 combo's.

I'm afraid that they also can interrupt heart rhythm, cause strokes in anyone with a tendency to seizure of any kind as well as affect slow breathing and other life functions to the point of death.

This info came to me from some very good Neuro's (yes there are some), at Mayo Mn. Dr. Diamond in Chicago before he passed and Dr. Joel Saper of MI.

Needless to say I do not use it ::)

This type of thing can be the very most dangerous type of "snake oil".

You would need to Know every single thing about your neurological condition as well as cardio and pharms.

Never helped a HA and I just feel compelled to share this with the family. As I said I still have it with all attachments (retail back then was around $400.00 and if someone would like it for research use I will be happy to send it along to someone that will be making it to the convention. (with some heavy legal disclaimers of course).

Expensive way to "trip" and a cluster will bust right past it on all modes.

Just my  [smiley=twocents.gif] .

Buyer beware......PFDANS......Tim

Tanner, it’s nice to make your acquaintance on the board.

I mainly wanted to find out if others have tried these things, and find out if any one had + or – results.

I’m using it with Hemi-Sync CD’s to relax. I’m always so tense, and it really helps me to calm down. Yes there are many warnings that come with these devices, and I’m not dismissing them.

About 2 yrs before my clusters started I began noticing auras in my left eye’s blind spot.

My therapist told me this is a symptom of EMDR, and she will test me next time I see her.

The L&S machine has helped my light and sound sensitivity, and I’m more relaxed. This may have helped my HA’s incidentally, I will have to wait and see.

All PF day’s to you my friend,

Rolo.. :)

No, I personally wouldn't waste my time or money on one of those contraptions. Besides, bio-feedback, relaxation, or meditation may just provoke an attack for me. I gotta go, go ,go. Sleep is sometimes my number 1 enemy.
I think I'll save my money for one of those bird-flippin' electronic fingers for my window !!  LOL  ;;D

Been thinking maybe there has been a massive improvement over the years.

I would still seek medical advice before using.
Glad you are getting something out of it though Rolo. The visuals were pretty amazing, especially with a tape of "Dark Side of The Moon" or 'Stairway to Heaven" in the audio part of the machine. (ok so I'm old) :)

If one of the busters wants it to play (test) I will be glad to ship it. No charge, I won't be using it again anyway.

Above warnings still apply.......Tim

Just give it to limey-bird at the convention Tim - but whatever you do, don't tell her how to turn it on :o

I may get it by about 2012 ;) ;;D

Lee even if I was going to be at the convention I could not do that to Helen.

This thing has digital readouts, weighs about 7 lbs figure it out I don't do metric ;;D

I can ship USPS for around $45.00 US

I have a little time so I will see if I can find a slower, but cheaper way. This needs to go through our TSA so that they can take a good look at it and clear it because if I was them I would take the stinkin thing apart to make sure it is indeed a dream/brainwave device.

We don't want our Helen to get hung up on her flights on account of a glorified toy :).

I would love to see your lot play with it to see if it has any value for Headaches so let me work on it.

Besides you know she would play with it on the plane and miss Heathrow [smiley=laugh.gif]

...Always the best mate......Tim

Hey Tim, we still do Imperial measurements here; indeed, I do believe we invented them (or perhaps it was the Canadians) ::)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_Measurements

FYI though, 7lbs is about 3.18 kilos (I believe), but in old money that's about 3 ½ bags of sugar.  You're right though, carrying that extra weight, she'd probably break a leg :P

Maybe it will be easier if I buy one over here, but let me know how you get on with alternative shipping arrangements before I go shopping 8)

Lee, you may want to buy one of the new "models" for the sake of comparison, but let me get this to you first. This really was and is the full blown version. At one time they even had a place in San Francisco where a person could go at lunch and get plugged in to a huge version of same nicknamed "David" and get a half hour of relaxation and stress relief.

Mine also is programmable so that you can write your own Deep learning or many other setups.

I will simply consider whatever it cost me to send as a donation to our cause ;).

It was not the weight that is an issue. What I was trying to say without saying it is that in this day and age of global bad guy's this baby looks like a device that our TSA or your Scotland yard would definitely want to check carefully out!!!

If I am not told otherwise it is coming to you. I only need a place (addy) to send it to.

God Bless and all that Save the Queen stuff....Tim

Proud to be a member of The Patriot Guard

edited to add; oh yeah on that who invented what stuff, it seems to me that we won a war a few hundred yrs. back which gives us the sole right to claim Paris Hilton ::)

This is getting more interesting.  One of the most common (unwanted) side-effects of the alternative treatment is what is often referred to as "post-dose hits".  These tend to either manifest immediately after the medication has warn off (some 4-6 hours after ingestion) and/or as an increase in attack activity for the next couple of days or so.  It happens to me about 95% of the time; even when taking a maintenance dose during what is supposedly PF remission.

This makes me wonder how closely related the potential mechanism of action is between the likes of bio-feedback, meditation, kundalini yoga, the alternatives and perhaps this light and sound machine therapy. If the "trippy" side effects associated with the L&S machine are caused through serotonergic receptor activity (amongst others), I guess there could be a relationship.  Also, if the machine has the potential to both abort and trigger an attack, this may further suggest a relationship, albeit tenuous; and if it is efficacious in the short-term, perhaps possibilities exist for longer-term prevention, as with the alternatives, through a similar (as yet unknown) mechanism.

Just thinking aloud again really; must do some more reading.  Out of interest Rolo, has your CH activity improved over time since using the machine i.e. either decreased in number and/or intensity of individual attacks?

Check your mail Tim :)

Dear LeeS,

Well, my shadow pain is almost eliminated. My night time attack's are down to 0-1 a night, and it has not triggered an attack while using it yet. My hit's are down to 5-10 min on the O2, or 1-2 short hit's a day. My mother let me use her Energy machine (an electrical device like a tense unit), and it has triggered an attack once on the Trigeminal neuralgia setting. The Energy machine seems to help some (?) on the migraine setting. The machine is a ProWave 101. I’m trying the ProWave to make my mom happy, I do not think highly of these electrical devices but she’s happy I’m trying it. Got to keep mom happy? I only use the L&S box on relaxation settings, and it makes me much happier and energized after I use it. I find myself humming a lot more. Sleep is deeper than before, and I was really whacked out from lack of sleep before when I got hit every 2 hrs at night.

I strongly want to advocate that I am not recommending this as a treatment, Just something that seems to be helping Me!

Best of luck, Rolo :)

Hey Rolo,

The last thing I even remotely care about when in the throes of a cluster cycle is making my mom happy...... She would be more likely to be banished from my house if she asked me to try some light and sound machine for my cluster headaches. A flashing LED from the DVD player across a dark room pisses me off in the middle of a cluster - I'd have to tell mom that i'll talk to her in about 6 weeks, bye bye.

Dear seasonalboomer :P

My mother asked me to use the electrical device (proWave), not the L&S box!

Cheer up ::), and it never hurts to listen to mum!

Regards, Rolo...
