Title: Benadryl overdose warning
Post by BikerBob on Feb 16th, 2007, 6:14am
I haven't used Benadryl but I've read here that many clusterheads use it. If you use Benadryl (Diphenhydramine), please read the info on these webpages:

Thanks BB!!   Wow, that was really informative.  Some of those more serious side effects are not common knowledge.

Yikes! and I've used this stuff to help with a common
cold. Think not again. Thanks for the info. Phil

Look, as long as you stay within the recomended dose you should be fine. This story is a little wierd because they do not say that it was the cause of death as it was still under investigation.

There are people who take 8 to 16 times the recomended dose (which is either 25mg to 50mg according to the box) for recreational drug use and don't die (says her's was 5x). Maybe there was something else at play here. Also, it is quite unusual for someone to kill themselves in the trunk of their car.

Just goes to support how medications effect everyone differently.

True enough. Compared to some of the stuff we have all tried from time to time, Benadryil seems somewhat
tame. It just goes to show you that to much of a good thing, is just that. All the same, an interesting thread.

Nothing earth shattering here. Used properly benedryl is effective.

Standard stuff. To much of any med is not good.

I practically live on it since they have cats where I work and am highly allergic. But I never take more than the recommended dose, and use a spray for skin allergen breakouts. But have pondered what the long term effects of use are.

Peace,
Carl

Carl, does the topical you are using have the same active ingredient as the pills?  Reason I ask is doctors have always warned us not to use benadryl pills and benadryl topicals at the same time on our kids because of the risk of overdosing.  I doubt it would have as great an effect on a full grown adult, but still something to think about.
