Title: Imitrex at night? Sleep aides Post by gcormier04401 on Feb 9th, 2007, 2:19pm I think my cycle is starting (shadow for past 7 days). This will be my first cycle after having been diagnosed. I've had CH for 20+ years... glad to finally know what it is. I'm doing the water thing and no drinking for the past week to hold off... we'll see... Question: sleep always triggers a CH for me. After 6-8 weeks I'm a mess. Is there anything I could take before bed to stave off a CH? Imitrex pill? Thanks for your input. |

Title: Re: Imitrex at night? Sleep aides Post by chewy on Feb 10th, 2007, 10:46am Imitrex is not a preventative. Might stave off an attack you might get immediately after falling asleep though. |

Title: Re: Imitrex at night? Sleep aides Post by Bob_Johnson on Feb 10th, 2007, 11:08am Ergotamine sub-lingual tablets are an old timer which will block night attacks for some folks. Dissolve one under your tongue about a hour before bed. Problem is, I don' know whether they are available in the U.S. or not. They have come and gone because they are no longer one of the favored meds so ask your druggist. |

Title: Re: Imitrex at night? Sleep aides Post by BigCoffinHunter on Feb 11th, 2007, 1:03pm Some Neuros will try a regiment of a long lasting triptan overnight, like Amerge. 1/3 of a tablet will let me sleep through the night with no hits. Sometimes (not often at all) this seems to push my regular night attack into the day however. But I find it a lot easier to deal with after a full night's sleep, rather than living sleep deprived. |

Hi Bob I recalled reading that Ergotomine and Triptans should not be mixed (Just in case you use Trex or another similar abort and are planning to use Ergotamine at night) Ergotamine and triptans should not be used within 24 hours of each other. Title: Re: Imitrex at night? Sleep aides Post by Found_a_cure on Feb 13th, 2007, 2:08pm Imitrex is for Migraine headaches to be taken @ the very first feeling of a Mirgraine to disrupt the cycle and this dreaming while you have a CH is phooey as you cannot sleep when you are in such terrible pain, and that's a FACT. and whomever says you can is full of it. |

Couple of things, Pal. 1st, change your fucking name, it does nothing for you or anyone else. 2nd, trex is an abortive and it DOES get rid of the pain for most. 3rd, I have never heard of ANYONE claiming that they can sleep through these things. 4th, read some info and ask some questions before touting cures and giving any KIND of advice. |

I suggest you have a read of this before spouting off any more half baked idea's. http://us.gsk.com/products/assets/us_imitrex_injection.pdf I particularly like the bit on page 2 CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY Mechanism of Action: Sumatriptan has been demonstrated to be a selective agonist for a vascular 5-hydroxytryptamine1 receptor subtype (probably a member of the 5-HT1D family) with no significant affinity (as measured using standard radioligand binding assays) or pharmacological activity at 5-HT2, 5-HT3 receptor subtypes or at alpha1-, alpha2-, or beta-adrenergic; dopamine1; dopamine2; muscarinic; or benzodiazepine receptors. The vascular 5-HT1 receptor subtype to which sumatriptan binds selectively, and through which it presumably exerts its antimigrainous effect, has been shown to be present on cranial arteries in both dog and primate, on the human basilar artery, and in the vasculature of the isolated dura mater of humans. In these tissues, sumatriptan activates this receptor to cause vasoconstriction, an action in humans correlating with the relief of migraine and cluster headache. And also, the bit at the bottom of page 5 Cluster Headache: The efficacy of IMITREX Injection in the acute treatment of cluster headache was demonstrated in 2 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 2-period crossover trials. Patients age 21 to 65 were enrolled and were instructed to treat a moderate to very severe headache within 10 minutes of onset. Headache relief was defined as a reduction in headache severity to mild or no pain. In both trials, the proportion of individuals gaining relief at 10 or 15 minutes was significantly greater among patients receiving 6 mg of IMITREX Injection 5 compared to those who received placebo (see Table 3). One study evaluated a 12-mg dose; there was no statistically significant difference in outcome between patients randomized to the 6- and 12-mg doses. Now trundle off like a good boy and prove where I'm wrong. Oh and while you're at it, show me where anyone with a confirmed diagnosis of Cluster Headaches has said you can sleep through it Helen |
