Title: How many's too many Cafergot Post by Pellsey on Jan 31st, 2007, 8:45am G'day, Got a prescription today for Cafergot and Verapamil (and a letter for O2, thanks to all the guys that told me about it). Been on them both before and I distinctively remember the last time I was prescribed it my Dr told me that being an episodic CH sufferer it won't be too bad if I go over the recomended dose as with any luck i'll only be on it for a month ot two max until the CH's go away. The label says no more than 6 a day or ten a week. The lady at the chemist stressed to me not to go over the limit. I told her that i've read up and am aware of the gangrene etc that can be caused by this medicine but unfortunately for me at the moment I could easily take ten in a day, not that I would, i'm not that stupid. If two or three don't work, try something else, that's my motto. I was wondering though, how many is the most Cafergot someone has taken in a week or day and hasn't had their extremities fall off??? |

Title: Re: How many's too many Cafergot Post by Bob P on Jan 31st, 2007, 10:18am I have, at times, taken up to 25 in one week. I routinely take 15-20 per week for up to 4 months straight. My fingers and toes get a little cold from lack of circulation but it has never completely shut down. Somehow my Doc can't understand how I would be willing to loose a finger or two rather than experience the full pain of a ch. I do know a guy who woke up one morning to find his toes turning black. Landed him in the hospital for few days. Ya gotta be careful and keep a close eye on things. |

Woke up one morning with a sprained ankle and thought little of it, but the next morning my other ankle was sprained as well along with one of my knees. Un-fun and never again. |

Title: Re: How many's too many Cafergot Post by pubgirl on Feb 2nd, 2007, 8:21pm How many is too many? One is too many if you haven't been given more advanced treatments. Not to knock Cafergot completely, but it is an old and dirty drug that has been superceded. It works for some where the recommended treatment route has failed but its side effects on the circulation wouldn't ever make it a first choice nowadays with what we know about 02 and triptans. W |

Title: Re: How many's too many Cafergot Post by Bob_Johnson on Feb 4th, 2007, 8:10am Yes, you have several superior options to Cafergot. The problem with C is that it's too slow acting for Cluster and a significant % of the active med is destroyed by stomach acid--but the speed of action is the major issue. It describes preventive, transitional, abortive and surgical treatments for CH. Written by one of the better headache docs in the U.S. (2002) http://www.brightok.net/~mnjday/chtherapy.pdf |
