Title: Migraine Buster
Post by Fr._Joe on Jan 14th, 2007, 6:01pm

Hi all,

I am having a really hard time right now, one of the worst since I was 17 (I'm 45).  I was just given topamax and I hate it.  Just can't effectively function on it.  I haven't increased dosage yet, but I am hesitant to.  I did a search on the stuff and found this site promoting something called migraine busters.  Has anyone ever heard of it?  Any opinions?

BTW - the topamax seems to keep the CH at bay but not pain free, shadow still present.

Forgive me, I guess I am just desperate.

Can't help with info on Migraine Busters, Fr, but anything is worth a look.  What else have you tried?

Oh, and welcome aboard.

Unfortunately I am not a candidate for anything that might lower blood pressure, and mine is low naturally.  Weird, huh?  I'll go through my files and work up a list of things that seemed to work though.  Oddly, the thing that seems to work, at least a little toward breaking the cycle, is a DRASTIC increase in calories, I'm talking 5,000 +!  It's not consistent, but it has worked. This week I haven't been very successful though :(

Over the years everything was tried, I think, at least once :)

The good news is that something that didn't work in the past may just be your magic bullet this time round, such is the nature of the beast.

Tried oxygen?  There's just so many here who swear by it and so far as I know it comes complete with no blood pressure issues (though I'll stand corrected if I'm wrong).

Check out the "Oxygen Info" button just on the left of your screen.  Makes for great reading.

Here's the website I found.

www.christianbody.com

I have no idea who they are, but I read their website and it "sounds" good, but right now everything does. :)

It has:

Borage Oil Powder (GLA)

Dong Quai Extract (Angelica Sinensis) (root)

Folic Acid

Vitamin B-6 (as Pyridoxine HCI)

Vitex Agnus Castus Extract (Agnusides)

Wild Yam Root Extract (Dioscorea Villosa) (root)

Looks FAB for PMT or menstruating women but not sure about any kind of headache help unless it is hormone related (as many migraines are but CH probably isn't::)

"CB Migraine Defense is seven time more effective than the leading prescription drug"

that's quite an unqualified assertion.

one of the testimonials also says:

"Praise the Lord for leading me to your website over 1 year ago!! I am so thankful to Him for the talents and knowledge he gave you and your husband, to come up with such a wonderful product that helps so many people. Thank you for being obedient to Him and His leading! Because of your obedience to the Lord, many people are migraine-free today!

Sorry to hear that you're having a difficult time right now Joe.
This site is a treasure trove of information. there are some pretty far out there remedies / medications that are very well documented by various members here.
Tried 'em all at least once? I'll bet there are alternatives mentioned around here that you have overlooked. I have fun keeping  my GP ( yeah no Neuro yet, mostly my doing) on his toes.
On another note, desperation leads to research & sometimes leads to solutions, experimentation & a bit of serious research.

Good luck & PFDAN wishes to you. I hope that you're able to get the pain under control soon.

it does sound like it's got a lot of good things that might help with hormonal headaches..&.migraines....

but....

Dong Quai Extract;
"This herb is widely used for all gynecological conditions for men and women including menstruation cycle regulation, infertility, postpartum weakness, menopause imbalances and anemia. It has been proven to be beneficial to the entire hormonal system. "

Can anyone recommend a good gynecologist for me? I have to be WAY past my checkup. I never knew I needed one.

Bobw
If nothing else, maybe Don should try it....maybe it would help his PMS.

Not making any endorsements of this product, but have to disagree with several points.

CH is not hormone related?  Guys with CH have abnormally low prolactin hormone levels.  And CH has been treated both with testosterone and testosterone blockers.  Both sound pretty hormonal to me (and why do guys have milk-secreting hormone (pro-lactin) to start with??)

Angelica is sometimes given the label of a "female herb" but it has calcium channel blockers and is a blood thinner - two actions that might help with clusters. Angelica is a very common ingredient in Chinese migraine formulas.

Given the fact that CH can be treated with an incredible range of types of meds, from 'blood pressure' meds to 'atypical antipsychotics' to pure oxygen to corticosteroids to histamine to hallucinogenic mushrooms, we should be open to the notion that maybe a "foot-fungus medicine" will be the next big thing - not that we all have foot funguses, but maybe that stuff that zaps funguses coincidentally calms the hypothalamus.

The vitex (chasteberry) tends to lowers prolactin hormone - which may not be good for CH.  I wouldn't take that formula for that reason alone.  And yes, that site is more about faith-based medicine than evidence based medicine, which doesn't sit well with me.    I'm not recommending it, but we need to keep an open mind unless we are content with the known treatments.

Because we have boobies.

Flo

That's why I said "not sure" and didn't damn the product out of hand, as although I don't personally believe CH is CAUSED by hormone problems, I believe quite strongly it is exacerbated (possibly even triggered???) by them and migraine most definitely is in many people. Migraine and CH attacks certainly are with me.

i.e. this product probably won't stop your CH headaches and isn't a "silver bullet" but if your headaches seem hormone influenced to you it might help.

I can usually prevent migraine in myself by using GLA and B vits, but I can't stop a CH cycle with them.

Here are a couple of good sources for meds more atuned to cluster.

Here is a link to read and print and take to your doctor.  It describes preventive, transitional, abortive and surgical treatments for CH. Written by one of the better headache docs in the U.S.  (2002)

Hey, I have moderately low blood pressure usually and slowly tried the Kudzu supplements and by adding it very slowly, I found that it did not affect my blood pressure. It did help my CH alot so you might try taking one pill and tracking your BP for the next few hours to see if you can take it.  But only if you promise to take your BP really often and only add like a half pill a day.
