Title: Imitrex Nasal Spray Dosage?
Post by rocky on Jan 7th, 2007, 5:17pm
I'm just curious as to the dosage others are using. Up here in Canada I can get either 5mg. or 20mg single dose spray. When my O2 fails after 15 mins.(15 lpm with clustermask) I have to go to my last line of defense. Just wondering what dosage others are finding gives relief. I know we're all different.
I've been back in cycle for 6 wks.(2-7 hits/day) after PF for 1 1/2 years.
Thank god for this site. So many of us in "the CH family" owe our lives to you wonderfull people.(too bad our little Canadian site didn't work out-Margi you Rock!)

Hi Rocky,

My name is Joshua.  I also get the 20mg Imitrex Nasal Spray and find that one usually kicks the HA after about 15-20 mins after taking it.  I have panicked in the past at a really painful episode and taken 2, but I think I was just freaking out.

Good luck,
Joshua

I have only used the 20mg spray, but did not have success with it.  The few times I tried it I was never able to wait long enough to see if was going to work I ended up going to the injection or the o2.

My last visit to the neuro he again gave me some spray samples and suggested I administer it rectally for better absorption. I tried it and I think it worked. I had already tried o2 twice and a couple of Red Bulls so I can't be sure it was the trex, but I was getting close to reaching for the injection when the ha quickly aborted.

It may be worth a try and even if it doesn''t work it will definitely get your mind off of the ha for a few seconds.

Mark

:o :o :o

Really?!? I will gladly be proven wrong on this but that's one of the craziest things I've ever read here. Imitrex Spray up your ass is better than snorting it? So, if you're a coke-head you'd really be better off if you were a coke-ass?

I'm sorry, I don't mean to make light but I'm really shaking my head on this one....

Scott

modified to add: I've never heard of this before although for those that have not had success with inhalers and their doc's won't give them injections I've heard of the sufferers recommending the doctor administer them rectally to themselves, inside the box.....

JESUS BLOODY CHRIST! I agree with Scott bigtime!

I have talked to a lot of doctors and sufferers but have NEVER heard anything so bizarre! :o :o

This post is mad! The only way a rectally administered spray would be more effective than a nasal one would be if your rectum was massively damaged  8). The membranes in the nasal passage are far thinner and more receptive with a quicker passage to the affected area (brain a mite closer than arse!)

Let's assess this objectively. Why would a pharmaceutical company go to such expensive lengths to develop nasally administered drugs if it was better shoved up your bum via a suppository????

I think I've heard everything now! (no I haven't)
Like Scott, I am happy to stand to be corrected but surely not????

W.T.F.    If you want to get distracted, shoot it up your butt then stick it in your nose, that should work.

Maybe this Doctor is a proctologist [smiley=laugh.gif]

I did find some articles on the web referring to studies on sumatriptan suppositories:

"In placebo-controlled clinical trials, sumatriptan, administered subcutaneously, orally, intranasally or rectally was significantly more effective than placebo in relieving migraine headache..."

"A suppository formulation of the 5HT1 agonist sumatriptan could prove an important therapeutic option in migraine patients who dislike or poorly tolerate injectable therapy and where oral tablet administration is unsuitable because of severe migraine-related vomiting"

However I did not find any info about nasal spray up the "bum." I was at the pharmacy tonight and asked the pharmacist and she had not heard of it either.

I was hoping that someone would bail me out and post that they stick those things up their ass all the time. Apparently not.

I have used the same neuro for 10 years and he is very knowledgeable, but perhaps he was just trying to win a bet with a colleague.  >:(

Hey Mark!

Actually the suppository idea makes slight sense for migrainers who are sick as the nasal spray makes me gag anyway- horrible taste, but since most of it is already in the blood stream already via the nasal membranes it shouldn't matter.

Bet it is just cheaper to produce!

Hope your neuro was having a bet or you misheard as I am still having visions of you putting a nasal spray up your bum, and it isn't pretty [smiley=laugh.gif] [smiley=laugh.gif] [smiley=laugh.gif]

Sorry about the visual!

He did mention the benefit of not having to taste it and perhaps I only assumed that he suggested it because it may be more effective. Personally, I would rather have a bad taste in my throat than a piece of plastic up my butt. That's just me though.

Okay, so here's what I'm imagining went down. You told the doctor that you didn't much care for the Imitrex nasal spray. Apparently without your knowledge he was getting increasingly frustrated with your complaints about the free nasal imitrex samples and finally said, "Well Mark, you can stick it up your ass for all I care for al lthe good it seems to do you."

[smiley=laugh.gif]      :-X :-X :-X

(Mark, this is one of those threads to remember, laugh nervously about, and then quietly change the subject.

You're right Matt and I do apologize for taking over the thread. It's probably obvious that it wasn't my intention to do so. I'm just going to start over.

Rocky,

We have the 5mg ones here in the US also. I have only tried the 20mg and without great success, so I personally wouldn't even try the 5mg.

Mark

PS: They are for intranasal use only!!

Thanks for the info . . . I'll have to look up the 5 mg.  Not sure whether it will work for me, but the 20 mg seems like such an overdose that I'd like to try it.  I wonder if I can find any samples . . .  ;)

Anal Trex should be viable, just like ergotomine suff-its. The large colon is made to absorb fluids...that's why turds come out firm and pointed at both ends, kinda. Ozzie got all pissed off with the post nasal drip taste, and tried under the tongue sprays. (I think sub-lingual is the term, just like nitroglycerin.)  Sed he had good results, with no painful rectal itch.

Try it. You might like it.
