Title: Pixie Mate and Rock Star
Post by KevinN on Dec 11th, 2006, 10:46am
I'm actually the wife of a sufferer.
He seems to have a bit of luck with drinking Pixie Mate everyday, instead of coffee.  If you are one of those who drinks caffeine and it helps, this might help you.
He also tried the Rock Star energy drink last night.  He thought it was the most disgusting thing he ever drank.  But literally three minutes later, all the pain went away.  He said, "this is weird. there is no pain. where did all the pain go?" (His usually lasts an hour or more of yelling, sobbing, rocking and pacing) He had taken all the other treatments we usually go through just a few minutes before (expectorant, homeopathic migraine blocker, nasal decongestant, excedrin) and I said, its probably the Rock Star, and he groaned and said oh no.....he had to go to the bathroom 3 times in the next 20 minutes, and had to take antacid because it messed with his stomach (any thoughts on that?) but we both thought, wow, if this continues to work....we've got it made.  Here's hoping and praying.

Here's more info on Pixie Mate that I put in my myspace blog.  I'm a research librarian, so I'm a bit thorough. :)

Also, pixie mate is actually pretty mild. I just prefer its taste. If you do more research on google with yerba mate, you will find more info.  I think if you use a specific type of gourd called a bombilla with the stronger tea leaves, you get a stronger hit of caffeine.

A helpful tip I'm passing along to all my friends: I've been able to stop drinking so much soda (i was very addicted to Dr. Pepper) because of Pixie Mate tea. It gives you energy, 800% more antioxidants than tea, helps with metabolism, and all kinds of good stuff. Check it out at:

So far I've found it at Whole Foods market ($5) and online.
My favorite flavors are Green Tea Mate and Limon Mate

Pass this email on to those you know are addicted to caffeine.... God Bless!

a Funny description of the caffeine in pixie mate:

Xanthine Caffeine - Warrior Princess (The lonely alkaloid in coffee)
This scantily clad alkaloid gerl whomps butt. It's just what Xanthine Caffeine does. And hey, her ratings have been pretty good so far. However, all that butt whomping can grow tiresome after a while. That's the problem with coffee. It only has this one Xanthine alkaloid, whomping butt, day in and day out. All by herself. She's lonely. She's over-worked. No wonder it leaves you with the jitters.

the Mate sisters ride to the rescue
But the secret to the bliss of Mate is that it takes coffee's Xanthine Caffeine and teams her up with her more soothing sisters: the ever-popular Theobromine (you know her as the sexy, sultry and oh-so-seductive stimulant found in chocolate) and the exotic Theophylline (direct from Bollywood and successful girl-next-door-who-just-happens-to-be-a-bombshell run as the stimulant in Green Tea.)
It's this potent combination of these three Xanthines alkaloids that gives the buzz found in Mate that balanced, soothing, zippity-do-dah energy. Coffee just can't compete, and it suffers by asking too much from its one, lonely Xanthine alkaloid, hence those jittery, crazy, chew-on-the-cat coffee crazies.
But it doesn't have to be that way. You can have all the zip in coffee with the grounded, balanced, oh-so-very cool, calm and collected quality that makes you feel... amaaaaaaazing.
So get all three of your favorite Xanthine Alkaloids (caffeine, theobromine and theophylline) lined up and on your side. Pixie Mate has the star power of all three of these warrior princesses, fighting with strength, harmony and the Pixie way

What puts the zip in Mate (pronounced mah-tay)? It's mysterious. It's nothing like fully loaded coffee. It's a kinder, gentler zip. Mate's energy is pleasant, controlled and non-addictive.

Traditionally, Mate has been used to enhance sleep and calm nerves while gently arousing a depressed nervous system. The people of the rain forest believe it burns calories, boosts metabolism, and can keep blood pressure in a more blissful state. Contains 8 times the antioxidants as green tea.

Most people feel more alert, more at ease and more capable of conquering the world.

this is a post about our experiences with both yerba mate and the Rock Star energy drink.
If caffeine helps you during your hits, or helps you prevent them actually happening, then you might have better luck with yerba mate.
The description of the caffeine in yerba mate - well, i just thought it was funny.  I found it on the pixie mate website.
The Rock Star energy drink - well, it worked for him once, here's hoping it will work again.  Who knows........
I hope that answers your question????......:)

Mate has caffeine-like compounds ... very small changes in the molecule, its a smoother buzz in some ways, less of a crash than with coffee.  Plus it probably has some other stuff  very different from tea or coffee.

Not sure if it is better for clusters than other caffeine beverages, worth talking about.

His hits once a year, usually in the fall, and lasts about 4 weeks (could be 3 hits a day, skip a day, 1 hit, etc).  Its been about 6 years now.  The first couple of years we didn't understand what was going on.  Now we do.  Every year we try different remedies.  If we must, we will get oxygen, but right now we are really low on funds.  Where is the best place to get oxygen anyway?  For cheap, that is.
I just hate to see him suffer.
And he hates missing work, because of the burden that puts on everyone else, as well as the financial burden.
And of course...the pain....
If Rock star stops helping, we might try to figure out how to go with the oxygen route.....

Well, Rock Star worked again last night, which is good.
But like they say, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.  We'll see how long it will work.
But for those who have the type of pain where caffeine actually works, have you tried yerba mate, and does it help you?
I think some days it helps keep them at bay for him....well, some days. :)
I didn't see much discussion on yerba mate when I tried the search engine, which is why I mentioned it.

Never seen it, never heard of it. Other than that, I'd be happy to join the discussion.

Hi wife of

Many of the energy drinks have taurine wich has the ability to quicken and magnify the effects of most of what goes into your body such as caffeine, sugars, medications of all kinds etc...... this may be what is actually helping.
Could also explain the quick relief reaction when he was loaded up with the cold meds.
