Title: Energy Drinks Post by goof1031 on Nov 17th, 2006, 11:57am I finally couldnt take the pain anymore and made an appointment with my Doc. About fell on the floor when I was told the price of Imitrex Nasal Spray (after insurance). 6 doses.....might last me 3-4 days if Im lucky. To the point of this..... I did get a Script of Midrin from a friend of mine and took a pill with an energy drink about 7:00 at night. (attacks were happening about 8-9:00) for a couple weeks) This seemed to avoid the headache a couple episodes. Of course we all know that we are never sure if you have avoided an attach or it just skipped a few hours. |

Title: Re: Energy Drinks Post by CynthiaB on Nov 17th, 2006, 10:14pm When I first started having attacks again in Sept, I got hooked on energy drinks. Up to 6 a day. I didn't put it together until reading this post. I found that the Monster brand was best for me. I had to stop drinking them because I was developing ulcers in my mouth. I still crave them, though. It must have been meeting some chemical need! |

Title: Re: Energy Drinks Post by Bob_Johnson on Nov 18th, 2006, 11:41am I'd guess that the benefit from these drinks comes from the high caffeine content. Some folks have reported good abortive impact from drinking very strong coffee--several cups-- at the early signs. |

I didn't notice this line before. Maxalt has never prevented a couple of episodes for me. It only works 75% of the time taken at a certain stage of the beginning stage. Energy drinks, however, have helped more in the aspect of lowering the intensity of several hits. I use them at the same stage where the maxalt melt works. How often do you get hit? Charlotte |

Title: Re: Energy Drinks Post by floridian on Nov 19th, 2006, 12:32pm Most 'energy' drinks contain the amino acid taurine, which is also a calcium channel blocker. Many people have gotten good relief from these drinks, beyond what could be expected for caffeine. But mixing taurine with verapamil or other calcium channel blockers could cause problems with the heart and blood pressure. There has been one report of a negative reaction to the mix. Six soft-drinks a day is on the high side, and the acidity from the carbonation could do things like cause mouth ulcers or cavities. Taurine is also available as a supplement in capsule form. The capsules are a few cents each, compared to a few bucks each for the drinks. |

Title: Re: Energy Drinks Post by Charlotte on Nov 20th, 2006, 3:08pm I thought you said maxalt, but i see you said midrin. Although Midrin is not in vogue now, i used it in the 90's. The main ingredient is tylenol. The thing with anything is in the timing. Charlotte |
