Title: Too Simple to Believe
Post by pb1264 on Nov 15th, 2006, 1:56pm
I am new to this site but have found a solution that works for me that has given me my life back.  I am a 20 yr. chronic sufferer of DAILY cluster headaches and tried many treatments and Doctors to find an answer.  After trying and having marginal results with many different pain killers to abort my headaches, I began to experiment with medications as a preventive measure.   Some medications worked for periods of time but I was concerned about the side affects of constant medication.  Then I found one that not only worked, but I can take once every 24 hrs and at a dosage well below the daily recommended dose.  I now take 100 mg of Naproxen Sodium (ALEIVE) each morning with my multi-vitamin.  This is one-half a tablet!  My doctor advised me that he has no concerns with naproxen sodium for me at these levels.  This was five years ago!  My headaches are gone (unless I forget to take the naproxen).  I have no concerns with any of my previously identified triggers and frankly I have put the years of miserable headache memories behind me.

I know it sounds too simple, but I count my blessings every day.

Has anyone else ever tried this?  Please ask you Doctor first as there have been many studies lately regarding the prolonged use of this type of medication.  However, most of the studies I have researched have extenuating circumstances and reference higher dosages.

God Bless!

This place is over run by people who don't suffer CH, I'll wager 10 bucks that some folks will agree with this and also claim it has worked for them in the past.

We've developed into an interesting community of headache.

Anybody up for a nap ??

Naproxen is an nsaid. Its a wonderful med and it's brilliant for a lot of headache types but not CH. I'm truly glad you have found it works for you but that does lead me to believe your headaches are not of a vascular nature, ie neither migraine or TAC (of which CH is a variety) This isn't to say they aren't debilitating to you, merely that they are another type of headache.

Within a clusterheadache attack the blood vessels on the affected side of your head swell by up to twenty times their normal size. Normal painkillers do not work in a way designed to alleviate this pain and will merely cause yet another headache, medication overuse headache or "rebounds".

What we need are meds which will constrict those blood vessels such as triptans, O2 or caffeine for instance as it is only by reducing that swelling that we can control the excruciating pain.

I'm very glad you are pain free but I'd respectfully like to point out that this isn't a solution for cluster headaches. I only wish it were!

Helen

hey pb1264 - your a 20 year chronic ch sufferer - geez my heart goes out to you . .

just wondering what othjer medications you had tried before discovering that an otc worked for you . .

im not sure what aleive is as we dont have it in the uk but is must be potent stuff - iv been on morphine and it hasnt even touched the sides of one of these suckers !!

Chop Aleive is an OTC there, its a prescription nsaid called Naprosyn (Naproxen) here and as far as NSAIDS go I have to say its pretty good. You have back pain or something like that and you're in like flynn. It won't work any better on CH than two paracetamol and  a nice cuppa though.

I use 2 or 3 alieve ( 220mg each) occasionaly in the past to  break the extended shadows and it works well for this sometimes but it doesnt touch full on CH for me either.

Glad it helps you pb.

An added thought;

100 mg of naproxyn sodium may be a case of less is more. it may be a preventive balance point. No-one else has tried that because the pills dont come that low.

If ever I run out of seeds I'll try it.  Dont care what everyone else says.  :)  Life could be simpler.

LOL Tim - not if you grew up in London it isn't!
I like your version better though but when you hear cockney accents you accept their version of it!
I have to say a 36 yr old who still lives with his mum sounds about as sexy as Chewy's socks  ;)

Tim, Tim, Tim... you're doubting the baked bean of the board????

I have to show my age here but it IS "In like Flynn" and refers to Errol Flynn who would screw any women who stood still for two seconds. Was particularly fond of 14-16 year old baby sitters (on the couch if you please). There is an hilarious account of such in one of David Nivens (a great friend of Erroll's) books, I think "The Moon's a Ballon".

"In Like Flint" was a wonderful movie that that tagged on to the legend, but Erroll was first ;;D. Now, that's  been ripped off by Austin Powers (there aint no originality in movies, just new audiences).

The Vatican didn't work out for him.
