OK, so there are two type - sustained release and immidiate release. What is the difference and why is there such a radical difference in the amount prescribed for the two differenct types? (ie: increments of 240mg sustained vs 40 mg immidiate)

Hi Charlotte-

The sustained release might be better described as slow release. The dosage is released slowly over a period of hours where as the immediate release is just that all the dosage is released much more quickly. The reason the quick release is in lower dose is because the concentration of the verap in the blood rises much more quickly than the slow release (it also drops quicker too) and you don't want the blood concentration of verap to go to high.
