Post by wysper on Sep 8th, 2006, 4:22pm
My Aunt recomended that I take scullcap (scutellaria) it's an herbal suppliment. She said take 6 every 2 hours and it will help shorten the length of an attack. She swears by it. Has anyone heard of that?

does your aunt have cluster headaches? if not, she's being helpful but probably doesn't really understand.

welcome wysper. read a lot on these boards. the things you find here on the medpage and such, and discussed on these boards that work are what works.

Never heard of it, I guess I would do some searches and see what others are saying.  I know I'd try anything that I could.  If it's safe and helps, then wonderful.

Not really my area but I would say that it may have possibilities. I would say give it a try, I would ask your Dr first though if you are taking other meds.

Skullcap is a powerful medicinal herb, it is used in alternative medicine as an anti-inflammatory, abortifacient, antispasmodic, slightly astringent, emmenagogue, febrifuge, nervine, sedative and strongly tonic. Some valuable constituents found in the plant are Scutellarin, Catalpol, other Volatile oils, bitter iridoids and Tannins. Scientific studies are proving this to be a valuable plant in many areas for mental disorders. Skullcap is used in the treatment of a wide range of nervous conditions including epilepsy, insomnia, hysteria, anxiety, delerium tremens, withdrawal from barbiturates and tranquilisers. A medicinal infusion of the plant is used to promote menstruation, it should not be given to pregnant women since it can induce a miscarriage, the infusion is also used in the treatment of throat infections. The infusion is given for nervous headaches, neuralgia and in headache arising from incessant coughing, pain, and inducing sleep when necessary, without any unpleasant symptoms following. Skullcap is currently being used as an alternative medicine to treat ADD and a number of nerve disorders. Should be used with some caution since in overdose it causes giddiness, stupor, confusion and twitching.

Some have used skullcap in conjunction with psilocybin treatment, not for clusters but to help ease the mild anxiety some feel at first from psilocybin. It is also said to be somewhat of an ah, er, um, aphrodesiac...

What is psilocybin treatment? Bear with me I'm new to this. Until now I didn't know that there were any treatments for CH's. Which sucks cause I could have been doing something about this years ago instead of going mad everytime.

Hey Wysper,
check out www.clusterbusters.com for info on alternative treatments.  Been pretty successful for many.  I've never tried skullcap-had tried feverfew a few years ago, no help.  Skullcap...ummm...might just order some.  If you try it, please let us know how it goes.  Wysper, think of this as a treasure hunt, we all have a part in finding the pieces that fit.  Even for those brand new to the board, but not to clusters, please share what you have tried, what worked, didn't work....just be cautious of using the term "cured" as is stirs up an awful lot of stuff round here.
Thanks for bringing this up...
PFDAN to ya,
kathy
