Title: Do I have to taper as I stop Ibuprofen?
Post by St_Joseph on Aug 29th, 2006, 9:17pm
Hi Everyone. I am stopping Ibruprofen for this cycle of prednisone. I don't think I will need it. So my question is after taking high doses of it for 8 months do I need to taper off of it or can I just stop taking it? Yesterday I dropped down to 1200 miligrams in anticipation.
I know high doses can cause problems but  it was helping me in the past. A post on here scared me straight though and I think I will try to stay off of it  because some nights I need 3,000+ miligrams. Maxalt doesnt make it thru the night though :(

Thanks for all of your replies

P.S. If anyone new  is reading this do a search on this forum on Ibuprofen because high doses of Ibuprofen are very harmful and can cause strokes or heart attacks. My neurologist is not happy with me.

Sorry. Looking at a pc hurts my head. Ibuprofen is what helps me but I know its dangerous and my neurologist is upset with me and wants me at a much lower dose. Maxalt doesn't help me make it thru the night. Oxygen doesnt really help me either. I am going to try it for a longer period of time. We are going to try lithium next.

I am going to try. The Dr. is hoping this round of prednisone should  break this cycle with the verapamil. So do I need to worry about tapering off the ibuprofen or just stop?

Thanks in advance

I have had high doses in the past.  You can safely just stop taking it.  At least that is what I was told and did.  Good luck.

Hey give the lithium a try, works wonders for me. It requires a little blood work to set the levels right as well as a little trial and error. He'll probably leave you on a prednisone taper for 10 days to let the lithium settle in, it's how I do it, works really well for me!

Don't let Jonny scare you! He's been doing this board so long he doesn't girl thingy foot around but gets right to the point. He's right, you're on a scary, scary, high level of ibuprofen. As hard as it is to remember sometimes, the headache won't kill you, that much ibuprofen will. Let us know how the lithium works for you. Check out any other meds you're gonna try, especially the non prescription ones, learn from others trial and error. Wishing you a break soon, these things really do suck.

I'll bet not.  Jonny's right.  Just flat quit taking it.

You're going to screw yourself up if you keep doing this.

Yeesh.

3000 mg....

I hear you. So does Maxalt get all of you thru the night? If I just use Maxalt I will awaken 3 hours later and I don't think I am allowed to keep taking the Maxalt. My Dr. even said pretty soon my insurance company is going to say enough is enough on triptans and stop allowing them.

Talk to your doc about tapering fast-and have your tried melatonin and benadryl for night times?eally has worked for many of us-9mg melatonin, 50 mg benadryl.

Guiseppi, it took me awhile to get the "girl thingy foot around".  You are TOOO funny.  And remember, humor is a sign of intelligence and creativity.  So what if people don't get it.

kathy (still LMBO)
Good luck St Joseph
