Title: Prednistone question
Post by maffumatt on Jun 28th, 2006, 9:23am
Can prednistone make your bones hurt? I am on day 3 of the taper and my legs and arms hurt like hell. In the last two weeks I have had a shot of prednistone and a shot of cortisone. Is this to much steriods, pluss started on the taper.
Matt

I don't know about bone pain but every time I've been on it, I end up with the "moon" face look - it makes me gain weight like crazy!

I've always been on long courses of it though.

I'm not sure if I would call what I've experienced as 'bone pain'...but I've taken enough too swell up pretty good which also made my ankles swell to the point of where I could barely walk.

I also doubt that the docs would've given you a big enough dose at once to cause major problems ... but it is certainly not unconcievable. Always ask what you are getting and what dose so through time, you'll know what kinds of side effects to expect.

If it continues to bother you or gets worse, call your doc.

Goodluck

I've been on pred for as long as 3 months, at doses never higher then 40 mg a day. Did the weight gain, the acne and the irritability but never had the bone pain. I think you should check with the doc and make sure nothing else is going on. Good luck.

I'm currently tapering down from 60mg/day (about 8 weeks), and every time I take it I notice that my hip joints hurt. I've also seen "bone problems" listed as a side effect of prednisone therapy. Look at the list below - the cure is almost worse than the disease. Almost.

http://www.transweb.org/reference/articles/drugs/pred.html

Side Effects of Prednisone

The most commonly encountered side effects are:

   * Sodium retention
   * Increased appetite
   * Increased fat deposits
   * Increased acid in your stomach
   * Increased sweating, especially at night
   * Increased hair growth
   * Acne on the face, back, and chest
   * Bone and muscle problems
   * Growth problems in children
   * Eye problems
   * Increased sugar in the blood
   * Increased sensitivity to the sun
   * Delayed wound healing
   * Decreased ability to fight infection
   * Thrush (Candida) growth in the mouth

 At this time Prednisone is the only thing working for me.
 I have been thru just about every med the Doc has except Sancert and there is a bottle on my desk waiting for me.
 I am putting off the Sancert because of what I have read about it and I would like to feel good a few more days.
 The Doc puts me on a new med and I feel shit for a couple of weeks then we switch again.
 It's like if we torture that basterd enough he will cure himself.
 Meanwhile I am back to sneeking in the predisone so I can feel good for awhile.

I've had friends horde their extra pred for me for the same reason, sometimes you just need a break and are willing to tolerate the side affects. Please make sure you're informed as to what the affects are so your choices are informed ones! Good luck.

Hello Guiseppi
 The reason I am crusing thru this posting is to learn a little more about the side affects of Prednisone.
 I was reading the posting ahead of me by "brewcrew",
listing all the side effects. OH YEAH I have had them all
or if I read it enough I will think I have.
 The question is that right now I am getting by on 30mg
a day. I could feel a little better on 40mg but I am making do on 30...
 How much is to much, I read about all the side effects but I cannot find anything about dose size. Am I taking to much? When do I overdose,  When do I become addicted.
 I guess I need to get a grip, get off the prednisone and start taking that Sancert the Doctor gave me and see if it works.
 I bet I am back here in two weeks on the Prednisone.
:-/

Prednistone ;;D ;;D
Prednipoision ;;D ;;D
The side effects are real ...all of them.For one or another one or two and multiple side effects for most. I have been through better than 15 tapers over as many years and if there is any way try something else.
I can say hips and ankles are going first other joints come later. :-/ I guess.
I can also say when it is the only thing that works it is obvious what one would do. In that case try to find a taper regimen that is effective with the lowest dose you can. [smiley=twocents.gif]
There are also suppliments you can take to counter act some of the side effects, if your that type.
all the best

My  [smiley=twocents.gif]...
I agree with Jonny. Ask your doc if you are taking too many steroids...and then take up bike riding.  ;)
Calcium OTC suppliments are a good idea.
I've had most of the side effects posted in this thread and b/c of that I try to muscle through a cycle w/o Prednisone.
Good Luck.

I'm taking 60mg/day since 4 days ago and I haven't had a CH for 2 days so far.  I had a couple of shadows today, though.  The doctor has me tapering off every 7 days.  We'll see what happens then.

I have steroid-induced posterior subcapsular cataracts directly as a result of pred. I wouldn't be here if I hadn't had the steroids but equally I won't use them again.

We all have to make the decisions on what meds we use for ourselves, all I want is for everyone to have that info and that they can make an informed decision. I'll support anyone in their choices so long as they know all the ups AND all the downs!

 I am trying to taper off now, I am down to 20mg per
day and have tryed tapering off to 10mg a couple of times with any luck.
 I swear, I start shadowing even when I think about tapering down to 10mg
 Tomorow I am going to try and taper down to 15mg and see what happens.
 Past this I am doing pretty good, I have not had a CH
in 4 or 5 days now, shadowding is minimal.
 As long as I stay on the Prednisone, I keep oxygen,
Zomig Nasal and red Bull at  arms reach. These are the things that work for me. I have used about every Med
out their and nothing else works.  [smiley=smokin.gif]
