Salem death puts focus on oxygen-fueled fires

Monday, March 29, 2004Investigators probing a deadly fire in Salem on Saturday morning have ``every indication'' the blaze was caused by a woman smoking while using an oxygen tank, a situation that has killed 17 people in Massachusetts since 1997.

Concerned by the alarming frequency of oxygen-fueled fires, state Fire Marshal Stephen D. Coan has formed a task force to help stem what is becoming an epidemic of preventable fires with often tragic results.

``We're looking at strategies to impress upon people how dangerous smoking on oxygen is,'' Coan said yesterday.

Theresa Reynolds, 39, was killed Saturday when another resident of her Boston Street dwelling sparked the 5:30 a.m. fire while smoking on oxygen, Coan said. Six other residents were injured.

Coan said the oxygen task force includes representatives from the fire service, medical community and Executive Office of Elder Affairs.

I more or less chain smoke when im in front of this puter (They burn away in the ashtray) but you will NEVER see anything lit while the 02 is going....EVER!!!!

This weekend I saw an old fart sitting in his wheelchair, O2 tubes up his nose, smoking a cigar outside a Walmart. Just glad I didn't see the human torch we was trying to become.

You'll never see me or Wes smoke while the O2 is on, cos we both gave up it's now 3 weeks, 1 day, 4 hours and 22 seconds since I last had a cigarette and inhaled deeply, and breathed out that hmmmmmm :-/ still at least I aint gonna blow my head off now ;;D

If the O2 is going you aint gonna see Dave or I light up!! We have too damn much to loose!! Besides neither of us are that damn dumb!!

I saw alot of bad behavior in that cottage at the convention.........people were smoking with tanks around alot.........the guy that dropped off Daves tank said not to even use candles in the house with it present... I was like ooooooooop... ok dude... but someone should tell those conventioneers that I was with in New Yaaaaaaaaaaak.............love ree

I didnt see anyone smoking near an open tank while I was there, theres a big difference between an open tank and a closed tank.

These reminders are good for an oxygen awareness week perhaps each year. NO ACCIDENTS.

I had put this in another post, but here goes again.....

I use 02....24-7.....and i use a concentrator at home on 2 lpm, and i smoke. Instead of getting up, and turning off the machine everytime i want a smoke i would just take off the canula, and put it far away from me. Once i didn't put it far away enough, and to make a long story short, i caught the canula on fire, and burned a big hole in my carpet before i could get the machine turned off.

Well, that was very stupid of me and it'll never happen again!!!! All it takes is a spark people, because that's all it took to start that fire!!
