Title: ever wonder of brain tumor?
Post by Reese on Mar 24th, 2004, 2:36pm
Whats up ppl, lately I read about someone who suffered with CH for years and finally found out it was a tumor or brain cancer, which got my fears rolling. I have been getting CH for about 6 years now. Almost textbook cluster h/a's. My cycles come and go on a irregular schedule though,no spring or fall tendencies. I usually have a cycle for about 1-4 months followed by a couple months of zero pain. This last cycle seems to have lasted about 4 months now,it gradually peaks and then diminishes but then starts right back again. I go weeks of kip1 or 2's up to a few days of 8-10's and then gradually back down to shadows, but then they start rising back up again slowly. Sometimes I go days with no pain, then a 8 or 9 jumps in for a day and then goes back to shadows or no pain for a week or so. Triggers like alcohol do play a role in my h/a's but sometimes get hit even when havent drank in week or two. I guess I just want some reassurance that I dont have brain cancer but just good ole' cluster headaches. I have a neuro who diagnosed my CH,but I have never had a CT scan or MRI,doc says its been going on so long it would not be brain cancer, just cluster headache. BTW,please dont recommend CTscan or MRI,just tell me Im not alone in this sporadic cycle of off and on all year round. Thanx

I should have mentioned that I only get 1 h/a per day(not as predictable as few years ago),rt.sided pain extending from temple to back of neck(constantly rolling my head around to ease pain),they last 30 mins.-2 hours, and oxygen aborts most of them. Signed,Paranoia

Could you please point out where it was you read this?  I'm curious to read it myself.

Ask your neuro to have an MRI or MRA done.

Quote:

How can you be reassured if you do not get one done??

Are you episodic or chronic?  Are you on any preventative meds?  I only ask these questions because you state you go PF for days at a time.

Thanks,
:)mel

P.S. cancer and brain tumors run in my family.

I'm not sure why you don't want us to recommend CT or MRI.

That would be the obvious choice.  I can't imagine a Neuro diagnosing cluster h/a's without having eliminated other ailments first with an MRI and Cat Scan.  I mean, everytime I have a seen a new Dr. over the years the first question out of their mouth is what tests I've had.

Personally, I think your Dr is acting irresponsibly by NOT doing the necessary tests.

*bump*

I've had several CT scans just to be "safe"  They're expensive, but worth the easment of worry...

This may sound kinda...I dunno...crazy...but well, there have been times when I actually wished it was a tumor.  At least...an operable tumor that could be removed.  Then I could go under the knife, have it removed, and never get one of these things again.

But that sort of thinking only occurs at...certain times.

Bleah.

I have felt exactly the same way.  Also, I think you'd be surprised to know there are many clusterheads that wish this was the case.

I typed brain tumor and cluster into google and found the link below, it says most tumor-related headaches are migraine-like and a very small percentage are cluster-like.  Looks like it is from a college neurology program, take it for what it's worth...

OK you little fuckin baby worrying ass homo  ;;D
I've had several CAT scan's and MRI's over the years and like the others have told you, your Dr isn't going to be able to tell you anything definite w/out knowing what's going on in there.
Yeah you're probably OK and it's probably CH's but why wouldn't you want to know for sure?  [smiley=huh.gif]
I agree with 9erFan in thinking that your Dr is acting irresponsibly by not doing these test.

Anyone who gets CH's should always be checked out  by a Neuro to eliminate possiblilites of any tumors & such. CATScan/MRI etc. I know you didn't want to hear that, but it's a fact.

Your doc is probably right, but I can't believe he wouldn't want to check it out. My doc makes it manditory every 5 yrs. Sometimes brain tumors won't show up for long periods of time.

The ones that did have brain tumors instead of CH's are probably dead now.

Reese,

Not only are you being a "worrying baby" but you're just being an ass in general.  If you want people to only post what you WANT to hear, you should try another site.  We are clusterheads!  Clusterheads don't sugar coat anything!

Why would you not want to get these tests to rule out everything??
Personally, like someone else on this thread, I would RATHER have a brain tumor than clusters.  The last time I had an MRI, I prayed that they would find a brain tumor.  When they told me the test was normal I burst our crying.  At least with a tumor they could operate and remove the damn thing.

Sorry you don't like our answers, but get over it.  ::)

Your MD is right, if you had a brain tumor you'd be dead if it were cancer and non-functioning if it were benign.   No doubt.

MRI or CT is probably useless but if you have insurance you could probably get one approved.  If no insurance you could go to the ER with a CH, give a false name, pretend like it's your first headache, and they'll do one.  Almost certainly a waste of time and money.  Useless.

There are a lot of episodic ClusterHeads.  You may very well be a perfectly normal ClusterHead, if that means anything.  Even as a chronic I go through cycles where it's worse sometimes.

Have you tried melatonin?  Research it on this site and then talk to your MD.

dont ever wish it was a brain tumor instead of CH.I recently had a buddy die at 34 from fucking brain cancer. He never did get to experience cluster headache type of pain but I had to carry his body to his grave. This is probably why Im scared and paranoid of head pain. I remember going to er few years back with a k10 and the doctors there also said no need for cat because they have been going on for so long. I just ignore posts that seem to try to egg on a battle, like some replies here. Now I know everyone here has not had these expensive tests done and maybe just wanted to hear from them that I am just paranoid and relax my fucked up state of mind.

On the night of my first cluster headache, I had a spinal tap in the E.R.  During the weeks that followed I had many tests including an MRI and an MRA which were both normal.  I also cried when the neurologist gave me the news.  I didn't want to die but I did want to have something that could be fixed even if it meant brain surgery.  I still do.  Funny thing, the neuro said if I had a brain tumor the spinal tap might have killed me, something about the pressure or something.  Also isn't there a saying that most people with headaches don't have brain tumors and most people with brain tumors don't have headaches? (OMG I used the headache word, be nice to me people  ;;D)  Anyway, hope that helps.
And Melissa, congratulations on quitting smoking!

as Melissa said:"Oh and BTW, next time you don't want to hear someones opinion on a certain subject, give a damn reason WHY you don't want to hear it. "  I thought I did? I specifically did ask you not to post recommendations for ctscan or mri's. Ok forget about it.  Melissa,my friend passed on 2 years ago,not recently as I posted, but it still seems like yesterday. I think you see my point as to cryin out after not wanting to hear about procedures that were NOT performed on me.

Title: Re: ever wonder of brain tumor?
Post by fubar on Mar 25th, 2004, 5:49pm
Reese,

I must just be stupid because I can't understand the questions you asked.  The thread it titled 'ever wonder of a brain tumor' and your post suggests you're worried about the possibility of a brain tumor, AND your friend died of a brain tumor so this is why you are concerned.  yet you specifically ask people NOT to suggest a diagnostic test to check it out.  What gives?  Are you saying, in effect, "I know it's not a brain tumor,  but the worry of it get's me anyway, so I'm looking for words of encouragement to calm these fears I know to be unfounded?"  If that's the case, then I guess I could understand it, but I just can't tell.  The hostility you have encountered is based in your seemingly contradictory and perplexing question/request .

You also went off on people for causing worry when you came here to relieve your worry, and basically said they should have known better because you have a 'worry disorder'?  When did you tell us that?  Were we supposed to figure that out by your signature in the second post?  ('paranoid')  If so, I don't think you gave enough indication that this was a problem.

Bottom line (for everybody) is that if you post a short question that has little context, expect answers that aren't in line with your expectations.  Your expectations are way too high.  If you want intelligent answers, ask intelligently framed questions.

this isn't an attack, just trying to sort this out.

Ok, I called my friend the shrink again and heres what he said.

Jonny, your little buddy, Reese appears to have some very real psychiatric problems including more than one personality disorder and appears to be manic/depressive and in the manic phase right now.

Some of the general statements he's made haven't made a bit of sense.  He also seems to be having problems with memory as well as comprehension.  He hasn't paid any attention to anything anyone's said on a rational level and is in a total emotional state of functioning and response.

All of the attention he's getting from everyone is accelerating his dysfunctional behavior.

I don't know of a solution but he seems unstable enough to do something rash when he crashes.

Reese,

every time I have a headache, CH or other.

But in my case, it's not because I would be that afraid that I'd have one. My doc informed me once I was first dignosed that it's not brain tumor.

:'(You see, my dad died in April 1997 - brain tumor. My uncled died in 1987 (April, too) and that was brain tumor, too. So, I do think about it every now and then. And now, as both my birthday (April 14) and the day of my dad passed away (4 days after my bday) are getting closer, I think about it all the time.

Best wishes & PF days,

I had a neurologist who pretty much took one look at me after my describing the headaches, and said: “You have cluster headaches." He said tests weren't needed. He knew my history.......granted this was something like 33 years ago. He was different but he taught me the technique which got me back a good chunk of my life.  These tests weren't used back then. I had my only Cat scan in the early 80s. Nice to know that there was nothing in my head......no surprise..... :)

I thought I might have had a tumor for a couple of days but I was lucky. Not many get a correct diagnosis so quickly. It’s okay for a clusterhead to be cranky, but be try to be careful.

Being married to an alcoholic for 15 years (now ex-wife) has led me to a place where I can completly understand your total lack of any common sense and your inability to READ the posts and form lucid thought around them.  Good luck with your sickness, take your fucking drunken hostility elsewhere, we have enough headaches without that shit.  Come back when you want to talk about CH.
