Title: Stupid Brit question Post by pubgirl on Mar 23rd, 2004, 3:34pm This one has been bugging me for a while. Why is it that in the USA you quite often have actors as politicians or even Presidents, when other countries don't seem to (there was that Italian stripper woman though, La Cicciolina or somesuch I seem to remember). Is it because you have more actors per head of population than any other country? or another reason Wendy |

Title: Re: Stupid Brit question Post by thomas on Mar 23rd, 2004, 3:37pm It's because we are too stupid as a society to acutally listen to someone who really understands the issues, we think just because someone is a successful actor he/she must be an expert on everything under the sun, we are in a fast rate of decline on this side of the pond, Wendy. Thanks for asking. |

Title: Re: Stupid Brit question Post by pubgirl on Mar 23rd, 2004, 3:45pm That's harsh Thomas! I kind of was working on the theory that politics here gets more like showbiz every day, and people need 'sound bites' not information, and actors are good at delivering stuff like that. I thought therefore it was just another case of where America goes we follow later (apart from WWII of course ;;D) W |

Title: Re: Stupid Brit question Post by Tiannia on Mar 23rd, 2004, 3:47pm A couple of simple reasons. A- It cost a lot of money to pay for airtime to campaign. So that people even hear your name let alone understand what your stands are on particuplar issues. Actor (especially big name actors get paid big buck and have the money availiable to them rather then trying to get contributions. B- To be elected to office is sadly more of a popularity vote rather then who will do the best job. So many people to never listen to any of the campaining, debates, whatever: go to the polls and see a name they recognize and vote for that person just because it is a name they know. C - Many actors are very verbal in thier critisism of the system. There are big rallys where all types of actors get together about some such issue or another and because many people follow the activities of stars they like more then the polititions, they start to thing that this person must know about all of the other issues as well. Which in some cases is true but not often. /hugs hun. Thanks for the emails, you made me feel better. Tia |

You are very right. Ronald Regan for example was very well now for this speaking ability. He was an amazing public speaker and even people who di dnot agree with this politics, where in tears and reasy to jump on the band wagon after a very moving speech. So in a way you are very right that people do not understand the issues, but they remember little catch phrases. That is a lot of times what gets someone elected. Tia |

Title: Re: Stupid Brit question Post by Cathi04 on Mar 23rd, 2004, 3:51pm Dear Stupid Brit Wendy(don't flame gang, I'm joking), It is because we are a nation of devastatingly handsome people who have above average intellects, and we have such intelligent actors and actresses that they are all highly acute when it comes to politics and such...and they are socially aware..thus they feel the need to step up and help our country be all it can be....... yeahhhhh.....dat's da ticket..... ;) Love, Miss Doublegusset!! |

Title: Re: Stupid Brit question Post by thomas on Mar 23rd, 2004, 3:51pm And when it boils down too it, actors get paid to pretend like they are someone that they are not, just like our politicians. lol. ;;D I hate polticians, all of them. I just vote for the one that will charge me the least amount of money to screw me. |

Title: Re: Stupid Brit question Post by ckelly181 on Mar 23rd, 2004, 4:31pm We in Minnesota had to endure 4 years of Jesse "the moron" Ventura (don't care if anyone likes him. I'm a teacher. He tried to destroy education here.) He was elected due to name recognition and "coolness" factor", as well as dissatisfaction with born and bred politicians. One thing I'll give the man - more college-aged students voted in that election than in any others. Yea, they probably did a great deal to vote him in, but it got them involved, and let them experience first-hand the power of the vote... Chris- not much happier with our current born and bred Republican gov...who is also killing education...Troubles? We've got Pawlenty. |

Title: Re: Stupid Brit question Post by stevegeebe on Mar 23rd, 2004, 8:23pm The end times are near. When our fellow citizens impose rules, on to whom they govern, at our choice, and do not include themselves in the laws that they legislate, something is dreadfully wrong. We deserve what we get. I know this is not pointed at your question. I needed to say it. Extremism rules the day and commom sense is dead. We could be so much better. Could it be the money? Steve G (Independent) |

Title: Re: Stupid Brit question Post by Opus on Mar 23rd, 2004, 9:39pm Hoots, I think this is what you have been looking for, Way back in the '60's ( wish i could remember dates ) there was a presidential debate, actually the first one on television, between Kennedy and Nixon. Kennedy understood how to look good and had a nice tan. Nixon refused makeup to make his pasty white face look natural on TV. People who saw the debate on TV said that Kennedy won, and those that heard it on the radio said that Nixon won. The next election that Nixon was in he wore makeup when he was on TV and he won. Later on we had Clinton, otherwise known a slick willie who dyed his hair to what ever would match the hair of his audience, he would be jet black when speaking to the young and gray when speaking to the old, on TV he was in between, and of course Al Gore didn't need any props, being that he invented the internet al all, too bad for him that the rocket scientist down in Florida couldn't figure out who to vote for. Reagon, was an actor, which made him a great speaker and everyone listened to him, when Reagon said "Mr. Gorbachov Tear down this wall" Gorby listened and let it happen. The worst part about out system is that there are never anyone good who gets on the ballet, so you always end up voting for the lesser of the two evils. Also the Ace and Bono lines were very funny, I am surprised so many of Brits like to punt an American football ( punters) So just remember who is president always looks good on the telly Opus/Paul |

Title: Re: Stupid Brit question Post by pubgirl on Mar 24th, 2004, 2:33am Hey Pink The whole country was outraged by that story. If someone is guilty, we pay whatever it takes to keep them in prison. We lock someone up for years who is innocent, take away half their lives and ruin the rest, then charge them for it! We give the man compensation for a miscarriage of justice, the try and take it back for prison expenses. Outrageous and unbelievable but true I'm afraid. Wendy P.S. We have got one actress politician, Glenda Jackson M.P. and she's quite an intellectual heavy weight and a serious politician but I don't know of any others. Some of 'em should have been actors though. |

Title: Re: Stupid Brit question Post by Charlie on Mar 24th, 2004, 2:49am People are afraid of making a mistake. They think they can't go all wrong voting for a known entity who communicates well and often looks pretty good. Cable TV has helped create this phenomenon too. If you want to get elected today, you need nonsense like gay marriage, school prayer, or some non-existent but perceived fear issue to get votes. Serious issues are hard and no fun. Some of these guys are decent sorts though. Reagan looks better every day Bush is in office. What Bush needs is a good regularly scheduled blow job. Charlie |
