Title: I'm sad today....
Post by 9erfan on Mar 9th, 2004, 1:29pm
I had to put my kitty, Carly, to sleep last night.  Last week she was diagnosed with kidney failure.  Instead of putting her to sleep at that time, I chose to go with the treatment option that the vet offered.  Was I just being selfish because I wasn't ready to let her go yet?  Probably.
I brought her home on Friday and I was giving her antibiotics, vitamins, fluid injections, and love.  But she just wouldn't eat on her own.  I had to bring her back to the vet over the weekend and they force fed her.  Well, I realized last night that that just wasn't a life for her and she couldn't go on without feeding herself.
I've never had to do this before, so it was the hardest choice I ever made.  I never knew how old she was but I got her from the SPCA 7 years ago.  Carly was the sweetest girl in the world and she always loved to get kisses on top of her head.
Now my other kitty, Teddy, is lost without Carly.  Last week when Carly was at the vet's Teddy just kept running around the house crying and looking for Carly.  I feel so bad for her.  They use to chase each other around the house every night.

I don't know how career pet owners do it....I don't know how you adopt pets, lose pets, and adopt more pets.   How do you put yourself through that devastation over & over again?  It's so hard!
My mom thinks I should go in a couple of weeks to the shelter and get another cat to keep Teddy company.  The reason I got Carly originally was because Teddy always seemed so lonely when I was at work all day.  Geez, I don't know what to do.  I can't imagine finding another one who will be as sweet as Carly.

Feeling devastated... :'( :'(

Ginny,

I am really sorry you lost your pet. My dog Chloe had a medical emergency the other day (turned out to be nothing major) but I was extremely upset and worried for her at the time. I don't know what I'd do if she were not here. soooo sorry. (((((((((((((Ginny))))))))))))))) :'(

My condolances,
Ramon

Virginia,

I just went though something similar.  Our beloved Kita, a beautiful Bengal cat, developed a brain tumor.  Putting her to sleep was horrifyingly difficult.  This was my daughter's love, and my cat's companion.  They used to tear up the whole house with the chasing and playing.  Seeing her fade away and lose control of her body was so painful.  Putting her to sleep was more painful.  I cried heavy sobbing tears as I acknowledged the vet's reccomendation that we end her suffering.  It was not unlike losing a child, a family member.

If you need to get together and have a cry over a beer or something, let me know.

Awww...V.... ya did soo much for Carly. I can feel the pain of losing my best childhood cat, Fluffy right now.
My heart goes out to you.
Y'know....there are plenty up there, waiting to greet Carly....several of my own....they are free to romp and play...and they are watching over us.
V...you and Teddy will be okay...comfort each other. If another cat is the answer, you will soon know.

A hug for you, V, and a heartfull of my sympathy.

I am so sorry for your loss, Virginia. Young cat or old cat, they hook themselves unto your heart and letting go hurts.

Oh Virginia,

I know how devasted you are. I'll bet your little Carly had the best life ever. Remember the best times.

I don't know if you've seen this before, but it meant a lot to me when my Shammer had to be put down. Know that your kitty is sitting at that bridge:

                 ---------------------------------
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

There ought to be a law about getting attached to pets. I just get too emotional when something happens to them.

Sorry for your loss.

Hugs to ya  BD

Virginia,

I am very sorry for you.  I know that it is hard to lose a pet, but it is very hard for teddy as he can not understand what happened. Your mom is very right.  When I had a cat pass we ended up having to give our other cat to our vet cause she just adored him and he would not be alone.  He was just devistated and was constantly looking for her.  There are some animals that can handle being alone, my cat now is one of them, but some need to have the company. Vibes coming your way hun.  Give Teddy a great big hug. And understand that you are not looking to find another Carly. You will find another friend who will have a personality all thier own, that I am sure you will love very very much.

I’m so sorry that you have lost a companion.
It is true that this is the hardest part of being a pet owner but I hope that you will give another homeless animal the opportunity to become part of your family. You obviously care very much.

Virginia,

Sorry for your loss....  I have a 14 year old cat myself, and I dread the day I have to go through similar pain.

If you take Fubar up on the drink, count me in.  It's been too long.

Fu - your treatment advise worked. Thanks again!

Chris

Hi Virginia,
Sorry. It's hard to lose a friend that way but it's the right thing to do. And it's not being selfish to try and help a trusting pet, it's selfish in not recognising that we've done all we can and it's time to let go.  Do get another companion for Teddy, it will do both of you a lot of good.
Kip

Sorry about Carly but Kip is right. It's the best thing to do and getting another is probably the best thing to do.

Ginny, (s'cuse the informalness)

My sister had a cat when I was young in the 60's.  The damn thing was just the most intriguing (as cat's can be) and I began to make friends with it, talking to it.  It became attached to me and one day when I left a low dresser drawer open in my bedroom, she had her kittens there.
Living with her and her kittens in my bedroom with kitties all over the place, which she trusted me to handle right away was what I thought a real trusting friendship.  Kittens are outragiously fun and mischevious. That cat was just the best pet.
I have missed that darn thing forever.  I have never had another pet since because it would not be THAT
pet. I'd just assume live with that memory forever.  It was a good relationship, probably one of the best of my preteen and young teenage years.  The memories are all good and still cherished.  That cat contributed to some solace and happiness during some rough years.
I understand how pets can be missed.  The good memories will stay but pets can only put in just so many years with you.  Having good years with them is what counts.  My brain's memory still has that smile of pleasure now whenever she comes to mind, 35 years later.  I don't remember her going anymore, my memory only seems to prefer to keep the times she was there alive.

Just sharing.  Sometimes I wish she were around when the clusters hit.  Her and her kitties.  Nah, she wouldn't want to see me like that, just like I wouldn't want to see her suffer either.

Oh my gawd I am sooooooooo sorry to hear this !!! I am a career animal owner and I myself don't know how I deal with it because the older I get the harder it is ! I have 6 house cats (I am a cat worshipper)......and I worry about loosein them and they are still healthy and alive !!!!! I've lost alot along the way.......all kinds of animals......and alot of it still bothers me or haunts me esp the loss of my best freind that was my palimino horse 3 years ago. I let him go for a while not knowing what to do.......I hate makeing that desicion !!!!! Who am I to decide ? I think a new kitty for your other cat and for you to fill that void you all feel is a good idea. I always recommend that ! Problem with cats is that they are hard to age even for a vet.......your other cat mite not adjust as fast to a new 'adult'.......I'm so sorry for your loss and I know how you feel many times over. Lots of tears in my beers Pam

Hi Virginia,

So sorry for the loss of your pet.  I think most of us here can relate to the way you feel.  These animals do become a part of our family.

Thank you all for your loving replies.  I appreciate it so much.

Last night was really hard for me.  I just kept crying & crying and just when I thought it was over, I started crying again.  I just couldn't stop.  Teddy was very distressed over the situation.  She kept trying to get as close to me as possible on the bed but when the crying got loud she would make this low groan and then jump off the bed.
I felt so bad for her, I wished I could control my crying!
