Title: BANDWIDTH METER (DSL)
Post by KingOfPain on Feb 19th, 2004, 3:48am
A diagnostic tool.

As far as I know, this should
work for any DSL user.
If not, I apologise.

2 WIRE BANDWIDTH METER

For testing your bandwidth.

Bandwidth Meter.

http://www.2wire.com/

After reaching the site,
click on the Bandwidth Meter.

From the test site:

This meter will determine your maximum throughput to our Web site.

Status: Conducting Internet bandwidth tests.

What does this test represent?

The Bandwidth Meter estimates your connection throughput from the Internet which can be affected by a number of factors.
The bandwidth to your ISP and some Websites can be very high, but the farther away your connection has to go may result in low speed or poor connections. This is very similar to the quality of a phone call in that a local phone call can be like talking to someone in the same room, but a long distance or international phone call can have static and very poor quality.

2Wire's Bandwidth Meter measures the quality of the connection between your computer and the 2Wire Website. This connection throughput should stay fairly consistant on a good connection and could indicate possible problems if it changes dramatically.

Hope it helps in someway.

A good diagnostic test/tool, IMHO.

313k here.... Man I miss the days when I had a desk that was connected to the Internet by multiple OC-12's.  I had pure gigabit connectivity to the desktop, and a direct gigabit LAN connection to most of the world's largest sites.  When I needed Microsoft Windows SP1 (over 100 mb) it took about 3 seconds to download to my desk.  Yee haw.

So, can I plug this meter up the beasts ass and measure the width of its band? I suspect it's about 12 wide, all bass drums and all pounding at once.  [smiley=laugh.gif]

Another diagnostic tool.

SBC Yahoo! DSL HELP

SBC Yahoo! DSL Internet Throughput Test

http://support.sbcglobal.net/dsl/speedtest/

This test will give you an indication of the throughput of your Internet connection.

What is throughput?
Throughput is the amount of data moved successfully from one place (e.g., your computer) to another (e.g., any given website on the Internet) in a given time period.

Personally I just use Ping and Trace if I'm curious.
Usually my max is  12 MBytes/sec  min 3 Mbyetes/sec.
