Title: Digital Cameras - obviously NOT CH
Post by 9erfan on Feb 17th, 2004, 3:30pm
1. Do you have a digital camera?

2. If so, what's the make & model?

3. Would you give yours a thumbs up or thumbs down based on quality of pics & ease of use?

4. How many megapixels is your camera?

Thanks to all who respond.

V.

B-Kodak Easy Share.....dunno the model, too lazy to go out to the car to find out!

2-A-Piece of cake!! If I can use it, anyone can.....I am sooo not mechanical!

OOH<OOH! I know this one....it's 4.1...I got the most megapixels I could find at the time....my camera is about 1.5 yrs old...maybe older...

2. Sony dcp-72? (I think)

3. Big thumbs up! I was using it after about 5 minutes out of the box. Pictures are excellent on the highest resolution and not too shabby for lower res.

4. 3.2 megapixels

now if I could only figure out how to post pics on the MB instead of that little red x  [smiley=huh.gif]

Thanks for the replies....at least the ones that were relevant to my questions!!  [smiley=laugh.gif]

Geez, can you girls go argue in your own thread please? ::)

I've got CAMERA questions!

I'm very suspicious that my mom is going to buy me a digital camera for my birthday and this is a very scary thought because the woman KNOWS NOTHING about digital cameras! Uh oh! [smiley=huh.gif]

I'm trying to think of a non-suspicious way to lead her to the correct information....

1.  YES

2.  Fuji S5000 FinePix (very good camera)

3.  Could be handled by a 12 yr. old  THUMBS UP!!

4.  3.1 mp effictive pixels and 6.0 recorded pixels.  22 x zoom 10x optical and 2.2 x digital with continuous AF shooting (most cameras do not have the continuous AF shooting yet)

Comes with a adapter ring ($50 value) for the soon to be released tele conversion lens and the wide conversion lens.

Buy a larger card..here's more info!!

The FinePix S5000 offers point-and-shoot simplicity combined with advanced exposure control. It offers a super long 10X optical zoom [37-370mm, f2.8-f8(W)/f3.2-f9(T)], and uses Fujifilm's new 4th Generation Super CCD HR with 3.1 million effective pixels and 6.0 million recorded pixels. The S5000 features continuous auto focusing and a low light focus assist lamp. You can record digital movies with sound at QVGA resolution (30fps). An 110,000 pixel electronic viewfinder provides you with a through-the-lens preview of the scene.

Can ya tell I like my digital camera?  hehe

OK, here are my answers:

1. (a) Yes at work
   (b) Yes at home

2. (a) Work one is an older Nikon 950
   (b) Home one is a Canon G2

3. (a) Thumbs up for work, but it has tons of manual settings that are way beyond most casual users
   (b) Thumbs up for home - easy to use & still lots of manual settings

4. (a) 2 Mpixel
   (b) 4 Mpixel

I guess I'd have to say that I am quite impressed with the Canon. It has one of the best (least delayed from button press) shutters that I've run across in digital cameras. The picture quality is wonderful and it works great in full auto mode AND allows me the manual settings that I sometimes want/need.

The G2 has gotten a newer sibling (G3) that has the same impressive features, but carries a higher price tag. (Of course, you may be able to pick up remaining G2’s at cheaper prices) I've also heard rave reviews (and seen some great pictures) from the Canon S40. It is also a 4 Mpixel camera, but in a smaller package than the G2/G3. All that said, I’ve always had good luck with both the Nikon & Canon names – good quality & features.

I guess it all comes down to what you want to use if for, and how much cash mom is willing to spend. Regardless, if you buy it from somewhere online my recommendation is to only buy the camera from the place. Typically, they'll offer you all kinds of accessories that you may want, but at inflated prices. I usually buy my extra memory cards from other online sites, or watch for rebate ads at local computer stores.

Take care
BruceD

I have the old Canon A 50. You want it?
To much hassle. I'll stick with the reliable 35 MM disposable.

Snap pics, drop at CVS, pick up later.

1. Yes

2.  Olympus Camedia C-50

3.  big thumbs up

I love this camera.  My old one, which we still use for work is a Canon Powershot S200 Elph.  Only 2.0 megapixels, but it takes great pics too.

Hope you get one you love.

Canon digital Ixus
Fantastic picture - great lens.
Jumbo prints look as good as those from my Pentax SLR
Very small and light
Easy to use
2 megapixels
2x optical zoom, 4x digital zoom
128 meg memory card in mine
Has a cable for viewing pics on TV/AV

I have had it 3 years now. Taken many 1000's of pics so far. I would buy it again! The latest models go up to 4 megapixels and 3x optical zoom and movies and sound too. I want one!

check out www.dpreview.com for good reviews - they are very thorough and unbiased.

For what its worth:
My camera is a Nikon coolpix (older model, no longer made) - very good camera, quality pictures, easy to use.  Most of the coolpix cameras are very good.  My sister and brother both have Canon powershot G-somethings (I think G2 and G3). Both are easy to use, take great pictures.

Three megapixels is plenty for making 3x5 and 4x6 prints, and does a decent job for 8x10.

The biggest limitation on digital cameras is the lens - the so called "digital zoom" on low end cameras is totally useless (except to mislead the consumer in advertising).  You can always enlarge a picture when you get it in your computer - though digital zoom doesn't add detail, and usually makes things grainy. Optical zoom, on the other hand, is incredibly useful for framing a picture and increasing the amount of detail. As I am a lazy person, I really like having a good zoom - why walk across the street to snap a picture, when I can stand where I am and zoom in.  Also, sometimes it is not possible to move closer to a subject except by zooming - for example, you are on land and the boat is anchored 200 feet away from the shore.   Smaller lenses and cheaper lenses do poorly under low light conditions.  For snapshots, there are a ton of good cameras that are low priced.
