Title: New Topomax warning:
Post by UN_SOLVED on Feb 9th, 2004, 2:38pm
The manufacturer of Topomax (topiramate) has recently issued a warning regarding a new and important side effect of the said medication. According to their studies, patients taking this medication can have a 23-67% chance of having a persistant decreased serum bicarbonate causing hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis.

Some manifestations of acute metabolic acidosis may include hyperventalation, lack of energy and appetite, irregular heart rhythm, and drowsiness. Chronic acidosis may increase the risk for kidney stones and osteomalacia and/or osteoporosis with and increased risk for fractures.

The manufacturer of Topomax (topiramate) recommends baseline and periodic measurement of serum bicarbonate during treatment. Serum bicarbonate test is a simple blood test that you can obtain in your local hospital and/or your doctors clinic.

You are strongly recommended tio acquire a baseline serum bicarbonate level at your earliest convienence
Please note that the same test will be repeated every six (6) months routinely in order to monitor any interval changes.
