Title: Clusters and Medications
Post by kim on Jan 31st, 2004, 12:23pm
I have been guilty of many things in this epic search for freedom from cluster pain.  It's a learning experience and for most a long journey, ........we learn by our mistakes (i hope).

If you are tied up like a pretzel trying to out-trick clusters, please listen!  If you fool with the meds, you will pay.  And it can be much worse than a single cluster attack.

In the beginning, I popped so many pain killers that my ears rang and i could hardly talk (overdose).  Luckily, i lived.  It could have turned out differently.

Once, I almost killed myself by accident with Prednisone.  I decided that it was not working.  I was at my wits end with constant attacks, dealing with side effects, the doc switching meds, keeping up with how i was supposed to take them, etc.  I said "fuck it" and stopped taking the Prednisone .........it was an experience i'll never forget.   I did not adhere to proper guidelines and I paid the price.  An angel was sitting on my shoulder or i'd a died from it.  Easily.

These medications are not to be fooled with.  If you take matters into your own hands, you are risking your life.  So don't do it!

Kim,
Just such good advice I'm going to post just to bump this up! (A victim of Prednisone as well)
Of course, everyone knows Dave can't just type one line.  :-X

I'd like to add to your warnings another that concerns many. Passing of medications from one CHer to another. Just one example would be Imitrex. I see no problem if someone has been checked by their doctor first and told Imitrex is safe for them, but if not, we wouldn't want to give anyone something that could cause serious other complications. This goes for any other medications as well.
If both parties are positive a med is safe for them, then by all means, share if you can. But if there is any doubt at all, what might seem like helping someone, could really be putting them in serious danger.
(Just something to keep in mind at gatherings or Conventions.)
Good post Kim,
Dave

Coolness Kim:

You're right. Prednisone is nothing to fool around with.

So here's a bump.

A friend of mine's family member is in jail for doing this.  The other person had a serious reaction to the med.  I don't think I could share meds (unless the other person was already on it or okay'd for it) because I would fear for their life in case of accidental reactions and also...I'd rather stay out of prison!  Many reasons for not sharing meds...  Be careful!

P.S. cute post pep! :)

Lizzie,

I'm curious about the jail thing.  What drug was it?  A narcotic or something like Imitrex?

Hey Fu,

Now If only I could remember who told me about it.... hehheh  I think I know, but it was awhile back so I'll have to ask her and see if it was her who told me.  If I recall properly, it was not a narcotic.  Just a normal ole drug, and the person had a really bad reaction to it.  I'll have to try to find out!

Bingo...I got the right friend.  She said that she doesn't know all the details except that she does not believe it was a narcotic.  The girl who took it had an extreme reaction to it and almost died.  It turns out the person who gave it to her gave her too much, but we do think it was a normal med.  She is currently in trial for it, but my friend doesn't know exactly what charges she is facing.  I would just worry about being responsible for someone's possible allergic or otherwise reaction to a medication they are new to or have never been prescribed.  Even with allergic reactions, sometimes you can be ok the first time you take the med, but the next time...it'll get ya.  I would say just use good judgement and be very careful!
