Title: Death by Hersheys
Post by toader on Jan 23rd, 2004, 11:04am
I've been struggling through my first cluster bout - pushing week 9 now with the usual suspects (topomax, verapamil, melatonin).

Still have a persistant shadows and flames on the left side of my head, but at least the night attacks have mostly stopped.  When the day attack pain level climbs to a 5, I have my little buddy R2O2 and breathe oxygen until it subsides.  Now that I'm on the meds, I've only had 1 or 2 super painful attacks a week.

The other night I sat down to enjoy a nice glass of Hersheys chocolate milk with my daughter.  About a minute after I took a sip, some stinker snuck up from behind me and hit me upside the head with a brick!  Not a very nice thing to do - especially in my own house!   >:(  Anyway - I almost passed out, fell to all fours and just wimpered until my wife was able to administer oxygen and a cold glass of coca-cola instead.

Never had a negative reaction to chocolate like this before.

Hi Toader.

I've heard that for some people chocolate is a trigger. I've thought the same thing a few times after eating chocolate. I wonder though, if it was just coincidence. As you know, the Beast will sneak up on you whenever it damn well pleases sometimes. Glad to hear it sounds like maybe the Beast is grasping for it's last breath and may just leave your head soon.

Sending PF VIBES.

When I first started my meds I got hit at odd times every once in awhile. For about a month.
Hope thats the case with you. Life without Chocolate would be too cruel a joke.

Chocolate is up there in terms of foods that open the blood vessels.  Not a trigger for everyone, but I don't doubt your report.

Toader,

The chocolate phenomenon is not entirely unusual with many CH sufferers. I don't know what exactly would be the reason for it but some are greatly affected by it (myself aside). As for soothing beverages Strong black coffee and Water times 1 million seems to help me. Now I gotta figure a way to kick this coffee addiction. >:(

Good luck,
Ramon

...that thought almost made me cry!

Toader...I, too, hope that it is not a trigger for you.

Dying from chocolate is the only way to go.

You know, if I were told I was diabetic, I would be miserable without chocolate, and would no doubt be sneaking it in on a regular basis.

BUT......I avoid chocolate with NO PROBLEM during CH cycle, and don't mind a bit!  Along with all the other triggers.

This damn CH thing just rules us!  The F_CK'R! >:(

I'm with you Thomas.  It's not the chocolate that is so much the problem as it is the milk.
