Title: non CH - UN campaign against obesity
Post by floridian on Jan 21st, 2004, 4:59pm
In what has been described as a surprise move, the US has taken a firm stand in opposition to the World Health Organization's campaign against obesity.

Just what we need, another nanny.  What ever happened to personal responsibility?  If I eat to much I get fat.  If I eat what I need I don't.  I'm fat, must me McDonalds fault! ;;D

Personal responsibilty is important, but social responsibility can't be ignored.  Should soda machines be in schools?  Would it trample on someone's or somecorporation's freedom to ban them from schools?   Who asked parents if the soda machines should be installed in the first place? If obesity is a major factor in premature death, shouldn't there be a public health campaign, even if it means criticizing some of the "food products" being pushed by large corporations?

In other news of the whacky, the Florida Citrus Commission is considering legal action against the Southbeach and Atkins diet book publishers for disparaging their product.  Love that state (but for different reasons). http://www.cnn.com/2004/HEALTH/diet.fitness/01/22/oj.diets.ap/index.html

And the government's left hand just estimated that obesity cost the nation $79 Billion last year ($39 Billion of that cost passed on to taxypayers). Meanwhile, the government's right hand works against food labeling and education. http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2004-01-22-obesity_x.htm

Another bunch telling me what I can and cannot eat, drink, think, say.

Who decides what is socially correct or responsible and what gives them the authority to make those decisions?

To me it's just another form of censorship and as far as I'm concerned, they can put censorship where the sun don't shine.
