Title: For those that use 02.....
Post by Roxy on Jan 20th, 2004, 2:00pm
I've always had problems getting enough air through my mask when I get hit.  Discovered in Iowa that Cat has the same problem.  We can both set the tank at 15lpms, and still have to wait 4-5 seconds for the bag to refill.  I always feel like I'm suffocating, the bag just doesn't fill up fast enough, and I empty it totally with every breath.

The other night it was so bad, I just pulled the mask off, and stuck the tube in my mouth.  I think that's how I'm going to use it from now on....(oh wait....I forgot....I'm cured.... ;;D).  Well, if I have to use it again....I'm going with the tube.

Does anyone else have this problem......or, are Cat and I just kinda weird?

What do ya'll set your tank at?  And, does your bag refill fast enough?

Tracey,

Actually I have the same problem *now* that I make damn sure that no outside air seeps in. I thought I was doing something wrong or my lungs couldn't take all the oxygen because of the smoking and all. But of course that theory would be wrong, since the bag empties, etc. So what I do is take shallower breaths and that seems to work.

Before I made sure that I was 100% O2, the results were very sporadic, now it is a 100% success rate, now if the bag would fill fast enough....

Ozzy

PS. Check for leaks, particularly were the bubbler is connected. I did find a small leak (I could hear it and sorta feel it, if not soapy water should do the trick)

At that flow, I cannot breathe fast enough to deflate the bag at all!  I normally use about 13lpm.  If you are not breathing hard, I'd suggest replacing the regulator based on what you are saying.  It really sounds like your regulator is not indicating correctly.  ...and Cat?  Ummm, coincidence?  I din't know.  Just my thoughts...

Well I'm about as certain as anyone can be about the flow rate being accurate.  1. My first regulator was made by Jonny, and even over a year ago when I asked if anyone else emptied the bag at 15lpms folks thought I was weird :P
2. When in the hospital on my various adventures over xmas (and other times) the docs have all stood around me with their mouths gaping open as I emptied the bag at 15lpms and was waiting for it to refill.

In NY at the convention I ripped the mask off the tube and started sucking the O2 straight from the tube cause I thought I was going to suffocate waiting on the mask - in fact the masks weren't that good and the bag was empty before I had even taken in enough air to pass it off as a normal breath.

I may be weird, or maybe as Randy says, Tracey and I can suck the chrome off a bumper... *ahem* but I empty the bag and have to wait for it to refill at 15lpm.

Maybe it's all those years swimming and being a life guard that I just have a large lung capacity.

That 's what I thought too, Oz. It ain't leaks. I grabbed their mask, inhaled as HARD as I could, and barely made a dent in the bag at 15 lpm. Watched Cat and Roxy BOTH empty that bag in one fell swoop of vacuum lungs. Scared me so bad, my testicles are still in hiding.

It's something I had to see to believe. Redefined basketballs and garden hoses.

er...I guess I won't enphasize that I have the same problem, for what would that imply, not that there is anything wrong with that....

Shallow breaths is all I have to say.

I quit using the bag too. My last cycle without the bag worked just as well. 5-10 minutes and the cluster was fading away. Your mouth is right over the hole and the 02 is streaming out into your mouth, seems like you still get plenty. I normally take large breaths, one after another when I am breathing it in.  I still noticed I got 4-5 sessions with the small tank and could not tell any difference in how often I had to replace the large tank with when I used a non-rebreather. Not saying change to the other type but if you don't have a non-rebreather mask, the other one will help. I have also used the cannula when I had to, and it worked just about as fast. Of course, my nostril felt blocked and I had to do some strong sniffing, but it worked. Just my   [smiley=twocents.gif][smiley=twocents.gif]

It takes 15 Lpm for me, too.  I use a regular mask with the holes taped over and take it off to exhale.   Probably under normal circumstances 10 Lpm would be sufficient but the agitation and urgency of the situation during a CH make that amount insufficient.

You girls must have some big, ahhh, lungs!

I also have my tank set at 15lpm but I do not empty the bag everytime I inhale and there is no waiting period for mine to fill up again. hmmmm....

Smoking sure hasn't hurt your lungs! :)

I have a welding regulator & have no idea how many LPMs I'm getting but the bag always stays full...not enough flow isn't a problem for me.....

chrome off a bumper ladies?... I want proof!  :)

Ya just might have a clogged orifice baby....Is it filling slower than it was new? I fixed mine.

I 've posted about this a couple of times over the years. This is the first time anyone ever reported a lessening of flow...gee now I feel useful.

To the archives Mr.Wizard....
http://www.clusterheadaches.com/wwwboard/messages/56354.html

My older regulator has a removable orifice which is the one I have cleaned with alcohol and compressed air. The clog occurs in the space above the eensy weensy hole right where the bubbler or hose screws on.

My newer regulator's orifice (eensy weensy hole) is built into the T fitting upon which the gauge fits. It hasn't clogged but I assume that if I removed the gauge at the top of the T I could douse the orifice with alchy and blow it clean like I do the other.

And, I will go clean my orifices, just in case.

No smilieys either....the restraint was tough.

No bag for me. Always used a straight mask with a full blast of steady O2 with great success.

But, that is just me.

You guys are SO wise! I haven't been having a whole lot of success with my O2. But I have taped my holes, will clean my eensy-weensy hole and hope to have better success next time.

Since I taped my holes, I have had better success, but sometimes when it is REALLY bad I feel like I am suffocating. Being a serious clausterphobe anyway, having the mask at my face is suffocating at times anyway. Hard to explain. I will keep working with it as this is my only abortive.

Thank you, thank you!

Jadedgazer, you can crank it all the way up to max if you want, even above 15 Lpm.  Having the O2 on the max setting puts out enough for me so that I don't feel like I'm having to work to inhale and so it reduces that suffocating feeling.  Probably that won't help much with the claustrophobia but if you take the mask completely away from your face and body to exhale (like exercising with a dumbell) that might help by cutting the time the mask is in contact with your face by at least a third.

I pulled my elastic band off because  having that dangling was aggravating especially in the middle of the night with no lights on.

As long as you're not breathing pure O2 for more than ten minutes at a time, a few times a day, there should be no side effects, so I think the flow rate shouldn't matter.

Maybe there's a Respiratory Therapist around here (or maybe somebody knows one) to get more suggestions.

However, there is a flapper type check valve between the mask and the bag if you are using a non-rebreather mask.If you pull the mask away from your face while exhaling, the valve will not close propperly so the bag will not fill propperly
