Title: Alien Space Babe in a house fire
Post by Karla on Jan 20th, 2004, 9:25am
I just recieved a phone call from Liz.  Last night she and her family lost their home due to a house fire.  The house is a complete loss and will have to be torn down and rebuilt.  She and the kids are fine.  Shaken up but doing well considering they almost didn't make it out.  She says for everyone to go check your smoke detectors and make sure they are working.  The smoke detector in her basement next to her sons bedroom was not in working order because it was beeping and her son took the batery out some time ago.  The house was filled with smoke before the upstairs alarms kicked in.  Luckly her son awoke and made it upstairs to wake them up before her smoke alarms went off upstairs.
They are staying with Liz's sister which is close to her kids school and work.  Liz said it will be 3-4 weeks before she can go back to work because she will have so much to do to recover from this.  The family is heart broken because they lost a kitten in the fire but are very thankful that they are all alright.  The fire started due to a space heater with stuff to close to it in her sons bedroom.  She said it will be a quite awhile before she will be able to get online and she misses you all. Any prayers and vibes will be appreciated.

Please let her know that she is in our thoughts and prayers.

My husband is in construction and it is always a good idea to check your smoke detectors. Normally if they are beeping for no reason it is just because the batteries are getting low.  That is how you know to change them.  3 months should be the longest that batteries should be in them.

A cheep cost for what could save your lives.

Whatever she needs,bump,bump,
Karla,Liz,
I want you to know(if it helps)that when I was 16 I accidently burned my parents house down and lost everything, including my pet iguana(iguanas are cool to have when your 16 and stoned all the time)anyway,I don't know how old Liz's son is,but if he's a teenager I can identify with what he might be going through.Regardless of realistic fault,it's a pretty heavy thing to feel responsible for. Especially at that age.And a month or so when it sinks in that IT'S ALL GONE!
When you speak with the family, please make sure they understand what he might be going through here in the near future.
I'm sorry to hear about it....whatever you need..

So Sorry Liz!!! This happened to my best friend who has 4 little kids & it is devestating. Main thing is everyone is Okay, everything else can be replaced although it may not seem like it now.
Within 4 days my friend had more clothes & food than they could use in a lifetime. What she'll be needing folks is cash....maybe we can figure out how to take up a collection...every little bit will help.
Whatever I can do just let me know...

Jonny and people wanting to give money. That is a great idea. I will be glad to take up a collection. Anyone wanting to give through Paypal can do so through HSG pal pal if they want.
You can find the paypal botton here!

There is no money in my paypal account so it will be easy to keep up with, just put for liz on there so I can include names of people who give.

Karla if the town happens to have a bank account set up for her let me know and get me a address to were to send things.

I just got off the phone with The Fire department.
I got to call back tomorrow and hopefully get a address on where she is. The office with the reports are closed.
They knew of the fire and tried to find the information but couldn't. I will call back in the moring.
Thanks Chris I just checked and do have it.
If I can not find her, all money will be returned to you guys. The fire department said there should be a record as to where she is. I should be able to get it or get a message to her tomorrow.

Holy crap! Thank god everyone is safe.

Talk about a small world. I am working some odd hours this week and was driving into work in the middle of the night last night. On my way in my drive takes me past the general vacinity of Aliens house (from what I gathered from a previous post).

I noticed an awfull lot of smoke and smelled what appeared to be a house fire.

Geez.....I am  sorry I did not stop to check it out.

Let me know if there is anything that I can do for you and you family.

I haven't posted here on the board in very long time, maybe even a year or two. Though I have continued to read, I just recently reregistered with the site. After reading that AlienSpaceBabe, Liz, has had to endure such an awful experience, I had to write and tell who ever talks to her next that if I can do anything, like donate money or goods, I am in line with the rest of this board. As I not too long ago lost a very important man in my life here in Houston, Michael Sieter, in a house fire and I know the loss that a family can suffer, even without the loss of a loved one. I am so thankful that the her and her family are safe and were not harmed by the fire. Through reading this board I have built a large force of respect for those who post here and sometimes are brought to tears when I see the love that flows over my screen. This is one of those times. I want all of you to know that even though most of you have no clue as to whom I am, I feel that I know all of you and if there is any thing I can do in this matter, this 23 year old is willing to help.
Thanks, Charles.

I have not posted in a while, I have become more of a lurker than a poster in the past few months. I am so sorry to read about the fire Liz. I am glad that everyone got out safely (but sad about the kitten).

When I was 13, we had a fire that we lost everything in. Because of great friends and neighbors, not only did we have enough food and cloths to get us by, we also had a friend that let us stay in one of their rentals for free until we could get on our feet and replace our home. It was a very hard time for us all.

Unfortunitly, we cant help financially .. but I will keep you in my prayers and if there is anything else that I can do, please let me know.

~April~

I made it through the snow to work today....

Sitting on my desk was:
a box of new clothes
three envelopes from fellow CHers

I really don't know what to say... anything I would say could not possibly convey the true thoughts and emotions in me.... I am deeply touched by all the support, be it tangible ($ or clothes) or intangible (so many IMs!).

Liz,
I hope things are getting better for you guys. I know it's gonna be long time before things get back to normal but just take it one day at a time and you'll eventually get there.

No one sent 25 cents Deb. Paypal charges a very small % when anyone send money  through paypal they get a %. I sent her the paypal history so she could see who sent what and how much paypal took out.
Thanks for doing this for her. I think with the donation I made took up most of the paypal charges.
You guys rock.
