Can anyone tell me what the hell the name of this is?

I know it came from some kind of ship that was dumping live ammo 12 miles out of Boston harbor just after WW2.

The gears on the cart go in either side of the pedastil...I guess to control foward/reverse and maybe speed.

Can anyone name it...I cant...weve all seen them in movies.

Sorry, from the top of the pedasti two levers would stick straight up and one would have to push them forward and pull then back to operate it.

I'm not nautical, but in layman's terms, is that the throttle or shifter?


From this page, it seems to be a throttle (but theirs is modern/digital).

I can't name it but from a few old boats I've been on the left lever is the throttle and the right the transmission. ?

Bingo Flo,

Makes sence to me.

A dude brought it into my shop to have cleaned (Brass) and welded....seems he got it on a 200 foot dive 8 miles from where the Navy said it was. He had to dive it again and bring up proof before the Navy would believe it was their ship.......Go figure!

Anyways, he had short bucks so he got short shine (Me?, I would have kept the sea damage to display in my house.....but you dont see that cause it was sand blasted when I got it)

Being the x-squid that I was. I think I have your answer.

It's called an EOT - Engine Order Telegraph. Your missing parts so I'm not positive. I used to work in the hole (engineroom). They would call us for throttle positions from the bridge.

So you were a snipe, eh?  I was a brown shoe.  Spent most of my time on the flight deck of the Indy.

If I'm right, this device did nothing 'mechanical' as in making the ship move.  It simply advised the crew in the engine room to go forward/backwards and how fast.

Nice piece.  Would love to have one out by the pool as a conversation piece.

Yes gofish. Snipe I was. The EOT would just let us know where to put the throttle on the engines.

It would also make noise (a bell sound) jonny.

My brother-in-law was on the flight deck of the Indy. Aviation fuels.

Blue Meanie is correct. It's a EOT.
Engine Order Telegraph. The handle was moved to send orders for engine speed to the engine room. In the engine room was an answering telegraph that was moved to reply to the tower or bridge that the order was received. It did not control the engine speed. If the EOT has 1 handle the ship had one engine and if the EOT has 2 handles, one on each side or face, the ship had 2 engines. Ching-ching

Don't know the name, but as others have said
you signal the engine room for more turns. ( rpm )

Those ships had pitch adjusted wheels, The numbers
selected was in reference to the pitch in the prob.

It is an EOT.  It does control the speed and direction of the ship, but only indirectly.  It sends the orders to the engine room, the engine room then responds by moving their levers (they have another one in the engine room)to the same position, which tells the bridge that their orders have been received, and understood.  The enginemen then go to the actual controls that govern the speed and direction and do what they have to do.

As Charlie said, they are worth a fair amount of money.  VERY collectable.

Am an ex-ICman and yes as has been stated is an EOT but is missing a lot of parts. I used to work on that equipment and it is still used on US Navy ships (just a little updated)

It was brought up from 250 ft down, was an ammo ship that blew up off cape cod that was dumping old ammo into the sea after WW2 so im told.
