Wondering if it would be interesting to list the wildest, strangest stupidest things we've done to abort an attack of CH. Here are a couple of mine:

1. Felt one coming on while at work. Immediately got up from my desk and went outside to run until it went away (works 90% of the time for me after 10 -15 minutes of running). After about 10 seconds of running I stepped in a hole and severely sprained my ankle. I went flying and landed in a giant puddle. Not funny at the time, but it makes me laugh now.

2. Twisted and wrenched my sprained ankle hoping that my ankle pain would override my CH pain. (CH pain seemed to just laugh)

3. Brushed my teeth so harshly and for such duration that my gums were torn up bigtime and bleeding profusely.

4. Jumped off my porch and landed on my back hoping to "jar something loose"

5. Shoved a spoon down my throat to make myself yak to rid myself of any toxins in my stomach which could be causing the attack.

Needless to say,
None of these things aborted the attack.

...also the smartest: an ER doc finally diagnosed me and put me onto oxygen........ ;D

Based on the advice of doctor from long ago, I tried to effect a rapid blood pressure change by going nude into our fenced backyard at 2:00 AM in February when the wind chill was 8 degrees. While I was standing there waiting for something to happen (it didn't), I was briskly goosed by the nose of a large, hairy dog which had entered through the open front gate. Scared the devil out of both of us. He ran; I ran!

No pain for about two minutes until the abject terror wore off. Well, my wife told me not to do it in the first place.

Hmmm... maybe I'm just not 'wild' enough. Well, there is the 'bang head on something hard' approach. I've done it, but it's never worked. Put an ice cube on my eye.

Probably the wildest thing was stuffing red hot Cholula sauce up my nose. It didn't matter cause the CH hurt worse than the Cholula. It didn't help either.

I'm a boring wimp when it comes to my attacks. The only I have ever done is rock or pace. Thats it for me...

A boring wimp? I would say an intelligent sensible person. None of the extreme things I 've ever done (please bear in mind I was in my very early twenties and knew very little about CH) have had any effect whatsoever. The only thing that has ever worked for me to abort an attack was to run until I was totally out of breath. It works most of the time and the subsiding of the pain seems to eerily coincide with the degree to which I have caught my breath. Once I have caught my breath and am breathing normally the pain is all but gone. Have you ever tried just taking off running as soon as you feel one coming on? Does this work for anyone else?

Besides banging my head into a metal stall door in a bathroom in a Atalnta nightclub and having to be carried to my room with astonished people wondering who the
"drugged out" woman was...........???

I guess it would have to be getting hit on an plane at 35,000 feet over Texas...out of Imitrex.....going into the small bathroom,.......on my knees ,sucking air out of the AC vents in there. Oh......with people banging on the door to get in. Jeeeeez, what we won't do, huh?

While driving down Interstate 75 I slamed on the breaks, skidded to a stop, got out of the van, ran around it several times looking for a cool place to press the side of my head against. :-/ Soon a cop came along and wanted to know what the hell I was doing. I finally convinced him I was not drunk when he saw that only one eye was bloodshot. ::)

The original inquiry failed to consider unplanned efforts to abort a cluster.

In 1994 I was managing the installation and software implementation of a very expensive IBM continuous form laser printer (229 ppm) at the Baptist Annuity Board (basically an insurance company). We were working in the, literally, "glass house" control room. A headache started and scaled up very quickly. I knew of an area that was very, very cold and isolated so I was on my way.

I reached for the glass house door with my left hand expecting to walk out on the right hand side. Wrong! I ran into a regular glass wall at top speed. Knocked me out cold for about ten minutes.

Results? Big assed bruise on my forehead. Upside? Headache only lasted twenty more minutes that I can remember, but I couldn't decide which part of my head hurt the most.

Collateral? The BAB wanted to know if I was a practicing Baptist. And, would I like to buy a policy?

OMG BillyJ that is one of the funniest things I've read in quite a while.

I guess I'm a bit more timid than some here... I pretty much always at least have on a pair of boxers and boots when dancing outside in the snow. Also, I haven't done the dirt diving thing from CJohnson, but I have dived head first into a snowbank to get cold quick.

Wow, I hope this doesn't happen to me tomorrow - going cross-country to Cali tmw AM. I am bringing plenty of Imitrex ns with me just in case though ::)

The only thing that I can think of - besides the constant rocking and fetal position - is the one time I got hit pretty hard at work. I went into the bathroom and locked myself in a stall. After snorting the 'trex, I paced and banged my head against the walls. When I finally got back to my desk, there was a nice bruise on my forehead and everyone wondered what my problem was.

Couple of things -

First - The dumbest thing I have ever done to get rid of a Cluster - Since the doctor told me I couldn't play football because if I took a shot to the head I might die since I had had a major head injury with surgery - He tells me this after 10 years of martial arts training. So, I decide that I am going to go into the bathroom and slam my head as hard as I can on the edge of the bath tub in an effort to knock myself out and hopefully die in the process. After the 6th hit, all I ended up with was a bloody forhead that needed stitches.

Second - The smartest thing I have ever done was go to the ER. I had 2 docs that worked hard and found the remedy which was really cool.

Lastly, Jonny, it sure must have been cold there. Either you are very poorly endowed or very shriveled. I could never cover my package like that.

I used to stand on my head hoping the increased blood pressure to my brain would ease the pain. Running down the street like a fucking mad-man did actually work for me to. I wonder why? maybe theres a correlation.

One time I tried lighting my head on fire and putting it out with a hammer every two minutes.

Hyperventalated into a paper bag (this was my mother's idea, by the way - some cockamamey remedy she stumbled on ::) - anyway - it didn't work :D

ran around the back yard at breakneck speed - tripped in one of the holes the dog dug and put her bone in - went flying and ended up with a badly sprained ankle :D

Repeatedly flung myself on my bed while muttering to myself(this gives the appearance of a very bizarre person :D)

When I was in my 20's (aka still young and stupid) and new to this cluster thing I tried to out-drink the pain. After many gallons of beer over many years I finally wised up.

You CAN NOT OUT-DRINK a cluster headache.

Im fairly new to this so I don't have very many memorable stories built up.. but.. I have had atleast one interesting experience.

I woke up with a bad headache just as my alarm clock came on.. now that wouldn't normally be a problem, but with me head feeling like it was about to explode and the alarm waking me after a near sleepless night I was a bit confused.

For the first 4-5 minutes I attempted to shut off my alarm clock with the remote from my CD player.. failing that, and getting angry (gee.. I wonder why that didnt work..) I attempted to shut off the alarm by bashing my head into it.. which did eventually work. I then got up and went about my routine of shuffling in a circle in my room in an attempt to ease the pain. What you don't realize is that the static from my bed combined with the shuffling Iv'e been doing works up quite an electrical charge. Needless to say when I went to turn on my light switch I got a nice suprise.

Now confused, with a headache, and my hair standing on end I decided that it would be a good idea to sleep on a pile of clothes on my floor.

I was found about an hour later by one of my parents sleeping on the floor with dents in my forehead that looked suspiciously like my alarm clock dials. *sigh*

What does this tell you? alarm clocks mean nothing if you have CH :P

My kids think the wildest is sticking my head in the under the counter ice machine. Ass end up....I've spent quite a bit of time that way.

The stupidest, is forgetting I was beside a pipe fence, and turning and banging my head on the corner post. That pain actually broke through the ch long enough for me to realize what the hell I was doing.

The most embarrassing, going to bed in an empty house, kids were all gone and not supposed to come home. My 02 was out on the front porch. Waking at 3am, slapping on just boxer shorts....making a mad dash topless through the living room.....and my sons whole damn fraternity had decided to camp out for the night there. Don't know who was more embarrassed, me or Tyler, but I have since been intstructed by him to please wear clothes.

Once, I say again once I ran head first into a wooden privacy fence at the same level of the cross members. It took four butterfly bandages to stop the bleeding.

Funny, but this actually works for me when the pain is 5 kip or below....I chew the heck out of a piece of gum! Realy chomp down on it! Hey, don't knock it until you have tried it!
